Choptank River Lighthouse shines on cover of new state visitor guide
CAMBRIDGE — The Cambridge waterfront will be front and center in the minds of tourists from around the country — and the world — as they prepare to visit Maryland in the year ahead.
The cover of the state’s official 2018 Visitor Guide features a photo of the Choptank River Lighthouse taken by Dorchester County photographer Jill Jasuta.
The Choptank River Lighthouse image is one of two covers the Maryland Office of Tourism prepared for the new edition of Destination Mar yland, with the other featuring the mountains of Western Maryland. The publication reaches an estimated half a million readers annually and includes information about some 2,000 different attractions, businesses, parks, towns and itineraries across the state.
“Having our lighthouse showcased like this in the state’s premier tourism marketing publication is a real honor,” said Cassie Burton, the president of the board of the nonpr ofit Cambridge Lighthouse Foundation, which manages the visitor experience at the city-owned facility located on Long Wharf in Cambridge. “That the state would choose to feature our community so prominently on the cover is a testament not just to the hard work of our lighthouse volunteers and donors, but also to that of so many other great businesses, attractions, and civic groups in Dorchester County. We are all working to spread the word about the stories our community has to tell, and the memorable experiences it has to offer.”
Destination Maryland magazine is distributed at state and county visitor centers throughout the state, as well as by mail and online to tourists who express an interest in visiting the state.
The photo on the cover features a “super” moon rising over the lighthouse, a replica of an earlier beacon that guided mariners up and down the Choptank River for much of the 20th century.
Jasuta is a Cambridge resident who has donated countless volunteer hours over the years to helping the Cambridge Lighthouse Foundation build and promote the lighthouse, which is open for visitation daily between May and October. Jasuta’s photographs of the lighthouse have also been featured in recent years on the covers of Chesapeake Bay magazine, Prop Talk magazine, and Municipal Maryland magazine.
