CAMBRIDGE — Cambridge-South Dorchester High softball pitcher Madison Pleasants did it all in her debut for the Vikings.

The freshman pitched a complete-game shutout with 15 strikeouts and also belted a two-run homer over the center-field fence Monday, leading the Vikings to an 11-3 victory over North Dorchester.

“Maddie did an excellent job today,” said Cambridge-SD head coach Kareem Otey. “She is very powerful. She is like a tank.

“She is so calm and collected on the mound and at the plate,” Otey added. “She hits her spots pitching, moving the ball around, and she crushes the ball at the plate. We are excited to have her.”

The first 11 outs Pleasants recorded came via the strikeout. She allowed just four hits with only one run earned.

The Vikings gave Pleasants an early lead with three in the bottom of the first. Abby Robinson reached on a leadoff bunt single and later scored on a throwing error. Maddison Lednum singled and runner Delanie Henry scored on the play after a throwing error for a 2-0 lead. Lednum scored on a passed ball for a 3-0 lead.

The Eagles got a run back in the second, when Lily Allen scored on a passed ball to cut the lead to 3-1. North Dorchester pitcher Leann Asplen got out of a two-on jam in the second inning with a strikeout and a ground out.

The Vikings went up 6-1 in the third inning. Henry singled, then scored on a triple by Lendum. Pleasants plated Lednum with an RBI single. Chloe Warrel then double to put runners on second and third. Adrienne Kane’s RBI single scored Pleasants to cap the three-run inning.

With two outs in the fourth, Pleasants crushed a pitch to deep center for her first-career home run to put CSD up 8-1.

An error in the top of the fifth allowed Allen to score for the Eagles to cut the lead to 8-2. In the sixth inning, Asplen singled to score Rachel Windsor to make it 8-3.

The Vikings answered with consecutive RBI doubles by Lednum and Pleasants to increase the lead to 11-3.

Though she has a young team, Otey credits Lednum for helping the younger players.

“Maddie Lednum does a great job running the infield,” she said.
