ANNAPOLIS — Dorchester County Public Schools S.T.E.A.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Mathematics) after-school essay contest winners enjoyed a special visit to the Maryland General Assembly with Delegate Sheree Sample-Hughes on Friday, March 23.

Fifteen S.T.E.A.M. students wrote essays on the subject “If I Were A Maryland Delegate for A Day, What Would Marylander’s Hear Me Say About the Importance of Keeping After-school Programs in My Neighborhood” to earn a visit with SampleHughes, take a tour of the State House, observe a session in the Gallery, and put what they learned into practice.

During their visit to the Gallery, they were introduced by Sample-Hughes and recognized by the Speaker of the House Michael Bush from District 30A in Anne Arundel County.

Next was lunch with the Sample-Hughes in one of the many meeting rooms within the House of Delegates where she and her Eastern Shore intern, Schyler Sample helped to facilitate a question and answer session for the students. This was certainly a treat as they learned more about government and the importance of how to express and articulate their voice throughout the legislative process.

In preparation for this excursion and an extension of celebrating National Women’s History Month, each participant was pleased to learn that Sample-Hughes is the first African-American female to hold this position to represent her district.

“It was a pleasure and delight to be able to provide this unique opportunity for our students who otherwise may not have been afforded this opportunity,” said 21st Century Community Learning Center Program Manager Terrell Sample. “It has been, and continues to be, my mission to ‘aspire to inspire.’ Certainly this came to fruition as each STEAMer participated with self-governance, passion, strong communication, and confidence.”

Students were also accompanied on the trip by S.T.E.A.M. staff Priscilla Kramer, Marissa Talerico, Cynthia Collins, and Lisa High.
