CHESAPEAKE CITY — The Cambridge-South Dorchester High softball season came to an end Monday, May 21, at the hands of Bohemia Manor pitcher Madison Penta in the Class 1A East Region final.

The sophomore pitching sensation threw a no-hitter with 16 strikeouts to lead the undefeated defending 1A state champions to a 2-0 victory over the Vikings. Cambridge-SD’s Madison Pleasants nearly matched Penta, pitching a three-hitter of her own, but a run off an error in the fifth by the Eagles and a sacrifice fly in the sixth was enough for Bo Manor.

The young Vikings were the Bayside Conference’s most improved team, flipping a 3-16 record in 2017 to an 18-4 mark.

“Our future is looking promising,” Cambridge-SD head coach Kareem Otey said. “We don’t graduate anyone, and we have a lot of freshmen and sophomores. Their pitcher had an outstanding game. Her record as a state champion speaks for itself.

“We just struggled putting the ball in play today,” Otey added. “Had we done that, we would have been a little bit more successful. She kept us on our toes.

“I’m just incredibly proud of the team,” Otey continued. “We started the year with a lot of young players in starting roles, and they all worked extremely hard and played outstanding all year against really tough competition.”

The Vikings got the first runner on in the top of the first when Penta hit Pleasants in the forearm. Maddison Lednum followed and worked the count full but grounded out to first to end the inning.

In the bottom of the first, Aubrey Heath looped a single to left, then stole second, but Pleasants induced a pop out and a groundout to get out of the inning.

The two pitchers did not allow a baserunner for the next two innings.

Bo Manor got the next hit on an infield single by Megan Horsey. She stroked a Pleasants’ pitch up the middle, but Cambridge-SD second baseman Natalie Kerr made a sliding, backhand stop. She fired to first from her knees, but Horsey beat the throw.

Penta then stepped to the plate, having delivered earlier on the day when she stroked a tworun home run to give the Eagles a lead against Perryville hours before the Cambridge-SD game during the Section I final.

This time, Pleasants blew Penta away with a strikeout to end the inning, and the game remained scoreless.

Bo Manor got a scoring chance in the fifth inning and took advantage. Melinda Morgan led off with a double to left. Arianna Frye entered the game for Morgan and immediately scored on an error off a bunt by Lexi Bolton for a 1-0 lead.

The Eagles continued playing small ball, trying to push another run across, but Viking third baseman Chloe Warrell gobbled up consecutive bunts and threw to first for outs while holding the runner at third. Pleasants got out of the inning with a pop to second.

In the top of the sixth, Cambridge-SD appeared to get its first hit on a shot to right by catcher Ariah Matos, but right fielder Abigail Heath charged the ball and threw to first to get Matos out. Penta then got her 15th strikeout to end the inning.

The Eagles added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth, when Aubrey Heath drew a leadoff walk and advanced to third on an error. She came home for a 2-0 lead on a sacrifice fly by Anna Tidaback.

Penta retired the Vikings in order to win the Eagles their second straight 1A East Region title.
