Dougherty died at the scene, Maryland State Police said. Three passengers were taken to the University of Maryland Shore Medical Center at Dorchester in Cambridge, where they were treated and released.

Dougherty was driving a 1999 Mercur y station wagon on state Route 16 near Old Madison Road when the front passenger grabbed the steering wheel, causing her to lose control of the vehicle about 4:07 p.m. Friday, police said.

The station wagon went off the road and overturned in a water-filled drainage ditch, with all four occupants trapped inside, police said. Upon removing the occupants, Dougherty was found to be deceased.

The passengers were James Michael Dougherty, 59, of Madison, Cynthia Denise Dougherty, 57, of Madison, and a female juvenile from Cambridge, police said.
