Tidy Up in Two

Taking care of your bedroom is kind of like taking care of your emotional self. You don’t want to walk into your bedroom at the end of a busy day and find it in disarray. Each morning before you head out, set a one-minute timer and quickly pick up anything off the floor and straighten up the dresser and bedside table. Then take a minute to make your bed. This way, when you’re ready to rest, your room will be a welcome respite for just that.

Declutter Your Closet

Spring is when many of us swap out coats and sweaters for breezier outfits. Before making that swap, look through your winter clothes and determine what you wore and what you didn’t touch — for those items, it’s probably been two years in a row. Decide what you’re going to keep, because you do enjoy wearing it; donate or give away, because you haven’t touched it in two years; or throw away, because it’s damaged, it’s faded, or just doesn’t look great.

Refresh Your Mattress

For a longer mattress life and a more comfortable sleep, rotate your mattress at least seasonally. Strip the bed and simply turn the mattress so the part of the mattress at the foot of the bed goes to the head. It’s a two-person job, so pull in a partner or friend. Once that’s done, vacuum the mattress. This will help get rid of all the microscopic things hidden there. Make a freshening spray with ¼ cup of witch hazel, ¼ cup of water, and 16 drops of essential oils (eucalyptus, peppermint, lavender). Mist the mattress lightly and let it dry before making the bed with fresh sheets.

Whiten Your Linens

White sheets and towels can grow dingy over time. To make them look new again, pour ¼ cup of baking soda into the washing machine right over your towels and sheets. Then put ¼ cup of white vinegar into the soap dispenser. Run the machine on the hottest setting to bring everything back to a brilliant white.

Start in a Good Place

Set your alarm so that you wake up before everybody else in your house. Take 15 minutes or a half hour to be with yourself and get your thoughts together while everyone else is still asleep. Giving yourself some time to prepare for the day ahead in a peaceful way helps you weather whatever chaos may come.
