OAKLAND >> An 18-year-old man has been charged with the murder of a 17-year-old boy in Oakland’s first homicide of the year.

Jacobi Julius Gaines of Union City is accused of fatally shooting Hasan Humphries, 17, on Jan. 13 in the 1400 block of 48th Avenue. Gaines was identified by witnesses and video surveillance, according to a probable cause document by Oakland police. “Electronic information,” although it’s not explained what type, also placed him in the same location at the time of the homicide, police said.

Officers were called to the 1400 block of 48th Avenue about 4:45 p.m. Jan. 13 for a report of shots fired. They found a 17-year-old boy suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.

Gaines was arrested on Friday in the 2600 block of 74th Avenue. Inside the home where he was located, police found evidence such as possible clothing that may have been worn at the shooting and a pistol believed to be the weapon used.

Gaines was on juvenile probation for a felony robbery and is not allowed to have a gun, according to court documents.

In addition to murder, Gaines also is charged with two counts of unlawful firearm activity and one count of carrying a loaded firearm on one’s person in a city. He was convicted of felony second-degree robbery in September 2018 with the allegation that he discharged a gun causing great bodily injury, according to court records.
