Man arrested for allegedly ramming officers with car
The suspect was arrested after the incident at station
BLACKHAWK >> A Stockton man has been arrested on suspicion of attempting to kill two police officers by running them over with his car during a Sunday afternoon incident that included a Contra Costa Sheriff’s sergeant firing his gun into the vehicle.
A Danville police officer and a sheriff’s deputy were both struck by a car allegedly driven by Eduardo Carrillo, 25, of Stockton. The sergeant’s bullet struck Carrillo’s car but didn’t hit any people, a sheriff’s spokesman said.
It all started at about 2 p.m. when Carrillo allegedly entered the Blackhawk police substation at 1092 Eagle Nest Place — a section of the affluent community where security guards monitor road access — and spoke with the person at the counter. A sheriff’s news release says he “displayed erratic behavior” and “was asked to leave the community.”
The sheriff’s news release says that as Carrillo pulled away, “he accelerated his vehicle rapidly and deliberately attempted to run down ( Danville) officers” and a sheriff’s deputy who’d been called for backup. The Danville sergeant fired into Carrillo’s car.
The sheriff news release does not say how many times the sergeant fired. A spokesman did not immediately respond to a request for the sergeant’s name.
The deputy was briefly hospitalized, and the officer was treated at the scene, police said.
Carrillo drove off, but was arrested about a mile away “after a struggle with deputies,” the news release said. He was booked into the Martinez Detention Facility on suspicion of attempted murder of three peace officers.
He also has been accused of violating probation, which gives authorities the legal means to hold him without filing criminal charges longer than the normal 72-hour deadline. Carrillo’s bail has tentatively been set at $1.5 million.
It is unclear when prosecutors are expected to meet with sheriff investigators and decide whether Carrillo will be charged.
