OAKLAND >> A 59-year- old bicyclist suffered major injuries Monday night in East Oakland when he was struck by a car that ignored a stop sign and did not stop after the crash, authorities said.

The bicyclist was treated at the scene by paramedics before being taken to a hospital, where he was in very critical condition. By Tuesday afternoon, the cyclist was listed in stable condition.

The crash happened around 6:15 p.m. Monday at 84th Avenue and Holly Street.

Police said he was crossing through an intersection while riding southbound on Holly Street when he was hit by a 2009 black Mercedes that was going northbound on 84th Avenue. The Mercedes did not stop for a stop sign, authorities said.

The driver of the Mercedes fled in the vehicle without stopping but later crashed the vehicle at 83rd Avenue and Olive street and fled on foot, police said. Investigators did not release any suspect information or announce any arrests.

Police said it was unknown if drugs or alcohol were a factor in the collision.

On Sunday night, a San Leandro woman died in a separate hit-and-run after she was struck in the city’s

Foothill Village neighborhood.
