Stanford, Cal players named All-Pac-12

Stanford, which finished the season with four consecutiv­e road wins, had three make All- Pac-12, while Cal placed two players on the all- conference football team, the conference announced Tuesday.

Thomas Booker earned first-team honors for allpurpose/special teams play, along with center Drew Dalman and receiver Simi Fehoko for the Cardinal.

Booker (defensive line) and kicker Jet Toner were named to the second team.

Cal cornerback Camryn Bynum made first- team all- conference, while linebacker Cameron Goode made second team.

Colorado running back Jarek Broussard and USC safety Talanoa Hufanga earned player of the year honors. Broussard was the offensive player of the year, while Hufanga was named Pat Tillman Defensive Player of the Year.

Ty Jordan of Uta h earned freshman offensive player of the year, and Oregon’s Noah Sewell was the defensive freshman player of the year.

Karl Dorrell, Colorado’s first-year coach, earned coach of the year for leading the Buffaloes to a 4-1 record and a trip to the Alamo Bowl.

STRONG’S 5 TD TOSSES LEAD NEVADA OVER TULANE >> Carson Strong threw five touchdown passes, and Nevada (7-2) compiled eight sacks and three intercepti­ons in a 38-27 win over Tulane in the Idaho Potato Bowl at Boise.

AU BU R N H I R E S B O I S E STATE’S HARSIN >> Auburn announced the hiring of Boise State’s Bryan Harsin as its next head coach. Harsin will succeed Gus Malzahn, who was fired earlier this month. The 44-yearold Harsin is 69-19 with three Mountain West titles in seven seasons at Boise State.

FLORIDA, MULLEN SANCTIONED FOR NCAA RECRUITING VIOLATIONS >> Florida received a year of probation and football coach Dan Mullen was sanctioned after the school and the NCAA agreed to resolve an infraction­s case involving impermissi­ble contact with recruits last year.

None of the infraction­s was deemed Level I, the most serious, but the NCAA said the head coach did not promote an atmosphere of compliance. It did not name Mullen, who has been Florida’s coach since 2018.

Many of the penalties, including reduced evaluation days and number of permissibl­e phones calls to recruits, were implemente­d earlier this year.

GRADUATION GAP WIDENS BETWEEN WHITE, BLACK ATHLETES >> The graduation gap between white and Black and football players on bowl-bound teams is increasing.

The Institute for Diversity and Ethics in Sport found that among the 56 teams playing in bowl games in this pandemicaf­fected season, white athletes graduate at a rate 16.3% higher than their Black teammates.

A similar study last year saw white athletes graduate at a rate of 15.6% higher than Black athletes.

Primary author Richard Lapchick acknowledg­ed the study was impacted by the coronaviru­s pandemic. Last year’s report included 39 bowl games (78 teams) instead of 28 games in 2020.

AIR FORCE, NAVY TO PLAY ON 20TH ANNIVERSAR­Y OF

SEPT. 11 >> Air Force and Navy have altered the date of next year’s game to Sept. 11, a decision that recognizes the 20th anniversar­y of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. The teams originally were scheduled to play on Oct. 2. SOUTH CAROLINA OUT OF GASPARILLA BOWL >> The Gasparilla Bowl was canceled after South Carolina withdrew because of COVID-19 issues within the program.

Gasparilla Bowl executive director Scott Glaser said organizers tried to find an opponent for UAB for Saturday’s game in Tampa, Florida, but came up empty.

NHL ENGELLAND LATEST VETERAN RETIRING BEFORE 2021 SEASON >>

Deryk Engelland became the latest NHL veteran to step away from hockey before players report to training camps to prepare for a shortened 2021 season.

The 38-year- old is moving on after 11 seasons to take a role with the Vegas Golden Knights Foundation. Engelland was the Golden Knights’ first local player, selected in the expansion draft after living in Las Vegas for most of his career.

Last week, St. Louis Blues forward Alex Steen announced his retirement because of a back injury, and goaltender Henrik Lundqvist said a heart condition would prevent him from playing.

PHILLIES PROMOTING FULD TO GENERAL MANAGER >> The Philadelph­ia Phillies promoted former MLB outfielder Sam Fuld to general manager. Fuld, 39, played parts of eight seasons from 2007-15 with the

Chicago Cubs, Tampa Bay Rays, Oakland Athletics and Minnesota Twins before joining Philadelph­ia’s front office in 2017. He has been serving as the team’s MLB player informatio­n coordinato­r.

Fuld will work under president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski, who was hired earlier this month.

METS, SYNDERGAAR­DAGREE TO ONE-YEAR DEAL >> The New York Mets and righthande­r Noah Syndergaar­d agreed on a one-year, $9.7 million contract to avoid arbitratio­n, according to multiple reports. Syndergaar­d, 28, missed the entire 2020 campaign after undergoing Tommy John surgery in March.

LIU TO COMPETE IN VEGAS CHAMPIONSH­IPS >> Twotime national champion Alysa Liu of Richmond headlines the list of qualifiers for the 2021 U.S. Figure Skating Championsh­ips that were moved from San Jose to Las Vegas because of COVID-19 restrictio­ns in Santa Clara County.

Liu, 15, will try to become the first three-time champion since Michelle Kwan’s run of titles from 1998-2005. U. S. Figure Skating announced the 146 qualifiers for the senior and junior competitio­n Jan. 1221 at the Orleans Arena.

2018 Olympians Karen Chen of Fremont and Vincent Zhou of Palo Alto also are among the Bay Area skaters who qualified for the senior championsh­ips.

Dinh Tran of San Francisco qualified for the men’s senior competitio­n while A nthony Ponomarenk­o of Morgan Hill and partner Christina Carreira are among the top ice dancing teams.
