No. 1 Stanford women able to hold off Arizona State

Francesca Belibi scored a career-high 23 points and added a season-high 12 rebounds, and Kiana Williams had 16 points to lead No. 1 Stanford to a 68-60 victory over stubborn Arizona State on Sunday in Tempe, Ariz.

Haley Jones, who was averaging a double- double, had eight points and seven rebounds, and Lexie Hull had seven points for the Cardinal (9- 0, 6- 0 Pac-12), who have held every opponent to 61 points or fewer.

Jaddan Simmons had 16 points and Taya Hanson had 15 for the Sun Devils (7-3, 3-3), who missed their first 10 field goal attempts and trailed 19-2 before recovering to make it a game.

Arizona State got within four points midway through the third quarter, and Iris Mbulito made a layup to cap a 6- 0 that got the Sun Devils within 64- 58 with 1:06 remaining. Stanford made three free throws in the final nine seconds.

Stanford has played its last eight games away from home because of covid protocols put in place by Santa Clara County, and scheduled home games against Oregon and Oregon State this weekend are expected to be moved.

NO. 6 ARIZONA 69, CAL 33 >> Trinity Baptiste scored 17 points, Aari McDonald had 12 points and eight assists, and the Wildcats (81, 6-1 Pac-12) bounced back from its first loss of the season with a rout over the Golden Bears (0-9, 0- 6) in Tucson, Ariz. The Wildcats were frustrated after being run out of the McKale Center in a 27-point loss to topranked Stanford on Friday.

They took it out on the Bears. Arizona led by 17 after one quarter, 29 at halftime and shot 51% overall. The Wildcats had a 50-22 advantage in the paint, 27-7 on the break and scored 26 points off Cal’s 31 turnovers.

NO. 11 UCLA 73, NO. 8 OREGON 71 >>

Michaela Onyenwere had a career-high 33 points along with 10 rebounds and the Bruins (6-2, 4-2 Pac-12) held off the Ducks (8-1, 6-1) in Eugene, Ore., snapping the Ducks’ 27-game winning streak. In addition to the longest active winning streak in the nation, the Ducks had won 24 straight conference games and 22 consecutiv­e games at Matthew Knight Arena.

Men NO. 21 OREGON 73, STANFORD 56 >>

Chris Duarte scored 23 points and the Ducks (81, 3- 0 Pac-12) defeated the Cardinal (5-3, 1-1) in Eugene, late Saturday night for their eighth straight win.

Eugene Omoruyi added 15 points, and LJ Figueroa had 13 points and 12 rebounds. Eric Williams scored 12 for the Ducks.

“It is always great to win games, but I think this team is great because we learn a lot from these wins,” Figueroa said. “We keep getting better game by game and are able to share the ball and talk on defense.”

Bryce Wills and Spencer Jones had 12 points apiece to pace the Cardinal, who had their four-game winning streak snapped.

Stanford took a 46- 45 lead on a basket by Wills with 9:45 to play before Omoruyi and Aaron Estrada hit consecutiv­e 3-pointers for the Ducks.

Amauri Hardy added a 3 for Oregon, and Omoruyi made one of his own to put the Ducks ahead 57-51 with 6:21 left. Duarte later scored five straight points to give Oregon a 62-53 lead with 4:26 to go.

Oregon’s 28 straight home wins are the second-most in school history and tied for the second-longest active streak in the NCAA. Altman earned his 677th win to tie former Stanford and Cal coach Mike Montgomery for 23rd in Division I history.

Oregon was without freshman point guard Jalen Terry for the second consecutiv­e game due to COVID-19 protocols. Oregon shot 42.4% from the field, but was 10 for 19 on 3-pointers in the second half.

Stanford senior guard Daejon Davis, who averages 13.8 points, 4.2 rebounds and 3.8 assists per game, missed his second straight due to a leg injury.

Hunter Dickinson scored 15 of his 19 points in the second half and the Wolverines (9- 0, 4- 0 Big Ten) remained unbeaten with a rout of the Wildcats (63, 3-2) in Ann Arbor, Mich. NO. 21 MINNESOTA 77, NO. 25 OHIO STATE 60 >> Liam Robbins had 27 points, 14 rebounds and 5 blocks, keeping up his impactful introducti­on to the Big Ten for the Golden Gophers (10-2, 2-2) in Minneapoli­s. Marcus Carr added 15 points and Gabe Kalscheur scored 13 for the Gophers. The Buckeyes are 8-3, 2-3.

NO. 5 HOUSTON 74, SMU 60 >>

Quentin Grimes hit a goahead 3-pointer to ignite a 10-0 run to start the second half for the Cougars (8-1, 3-1 American), who rebounded from their first loss with a victory over the previously undefeated Mustangs (6-1, 2-1) in Dallas.
