Schumer gently mocks Baldwin
Amy Schumer feels bad for Hilaria Baldwin and for the part she inadvertently played in kicking off the controversy that may have derailed Baldwin’s reputation for “authenticity” and her thriving career as an influencer, dispensing advice about parenting, wellness and yoga.
The Hilaria Baldwin controversy consumed the internet at the start of 2021 and centered on Alec Baldwin’s wife apparently branding herself as a glamorous immigrant from Spain.
In a new interview with “Entertainment Tonight,” Schumer agrees with many that the controversy was “so insane” and “entertaining,” especially after a dark, pandemic-filled 2020 and right before the news cycle was consumed by the insurrection at the U.S. Capitol.
“I think Hilaria is probably the only person who is happy about the insurrection in the Capitol, because it distracted (people) from (her scandal),” the comedian joked.
Baldwin, born Hillary Hayward-Thomas in Boston, affected a Spanish accent during TV or podcast appearances. The mother of five young children also didn’t object when official biographies or cover stories in Spanish-language publications said she was born in Spain or referred to Spanish being her “native” language.
“Look, she’s a mom,” Schumer told “Entertainment Tonight.” “She has a million and a half kids, and that’s really hard. So I just, I don’t want them to be going through a bad time. But also, you can’t just pretend you’re from Spain.”
Questions about Baldwin’s true heritage had been simmering for years. But Schumer pushed them into the mainstream after she poked fun at one of Baldwin’s photos where she is just wearing lingerie while holding one of her children or doing a complicated yoga move.
The former ballroom dancer, 37, said she wanted to show pride in her postbaby body. Schumer reposted the image on her Instagram account with a cheeky caption, suggesting that it was her in the photo.
Baldwin took issue with Schumer and others for mocking her photo and took to Instagram with a video message, calling people out for “body shaming.”
