BERKELEY >> A vehicular collision that killed two people and injured another person Tuesday afternoon in a North Berkeley neighborhood remained under investigation Wednesday, authorities said.
The names of the woman and man killed had not been released as of Wednesday afternoon.
The two-vehicle collision happened about 1:39 p.m. Tuesday in the 2200 block of Marin Avenue, between Spruce Street and Santa Barbara Road, a police spokesman said.
When officers arrived, they found a female passenger in a Toyota with grave injuries. She was pronounced dead at the scene. A man who had been driving the Toyota was taken to a hospital and initially listed in critical condition, but he also was pronounced dead later in the day.
The other vehicle’s driver, a 42-year-old Kensington woman who suffered moderate injuries, was taken to a hospital for treatment. Her condition was not publicly released. Her 3-year-old daughter, who was a passenger in that car, sustained no visible injuries but was taken to a hospital for evaluation, authorities said.
Police said Wednesday the
Kensington woman was driving an Audi SUV that had just turned onto westbound Marin Avenue when it was hit from behind by a Toyota containing the two who died.
Other officers blocked off lanes of Marin between Spruce and Oxford streets and summoned a PG&E crew for repairs related to a power pole downed by the collision..
Investigators reached out to Berkeley Unified School District staff, given the accident’s closeness to Cragmont Elementary
School, in hopes of redirecting traffic for parents picking up students.
