San Leandro man killed in West Oakland shooting
OAKLAND >> A San Leandro man was fatally shot Friday afternoon in West Oakland, police said.
The shooting was reported at about 3 p.m. Friday on the 2200 block of Chestnut Street at West Grand Avenue.
The man, whose name and age were not released, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police did not release many details of their investigation, such as whether the man was shot by someone who confronted him on the street or from a passing vehicle, or why they believe the man was in Oakland. A motive for the shooting has not been determined and no arrests have been made.
The killing is the 62nd homicide investigated by Oakland police this year. Last year at this time police had investigated 34 homicides in the city.
“Obviously this is another tragic, senseless act of violence,” said Oakland police Chief LeRonne Armstrong.
Todd Walker of the Baker Prado Funeral
Home said he was driving a hearse back from Rolling Hills Memorial Park when he encountered the scene. He’s buried at least 10 Oakland homicide victims this year.
“It’s sickening every time you see these shell casings and yellow tape,” he said. “You already know what happened.”
Walker said shootings in the city aren’t always gangrelated, referring to statements police made about a June 19 mass shooting at Lake Merritt, which left one dead and seven injured.
“All kids ain’t in gangs,” he said. “Give them some kind of break. Give them something to do. Give them some jobs. We won’t have to worry about them shooting and all of that. Take some of the anger out of them.”
Police and Crime Stoppers of Oakland are offering up to $10,000 in reward money for information leading to the arrest of the shooter. Anyone with information can contact police at 510-238-3821 or 510-238-7950, or Crime Stoppers at 510-777-8572.
