RICHMOND >> Remains of an apparent human foot were found inside an athletic shoe Saturday on the beach at Point San Pablo, leaving police trying to determine if the person the appendange belongs to died by suicide or some other way, authorities said Monday.

Police Sgt. Aaron Pomeroy said it is a right foot, but further details about the remains, including race and gender, were unknown. The foot is a size 6½ to 7.

It was found inside a blue Saucony running shoe about 2:45 p.m. Saturday

by a person visiting the beach. The shoe was in good condition, authorities said.

Pomeroy said authorities believe the remains may be from a person who died after jumping from a bridge, possibly the Golden Gate or the Richmond-San Rafael.

Pomeroy said it is not uncommon for human body parts, typically a foot or fingers, to wash up on the shoreline due to the direction of the tide. He said it was difficult to say exactly how long the foot had been in the water, but estimated at least a few months.

He said Richmond police have reached out to local law enforcement agencies regarding any missing persons cases they have that may be related to the recovery of the foot.

The foot was taken to the Contra Costa County Coroner's Office.

Anyone with information about the foot is asked to call Pomeroy at 510-6206616 or the department's anonymous tip line at 510307-8177 (T1PS).
