Tortorella gets win No. 700 as Flyers top Wild in a shootout

James van Riemsdyk scored the only goal in a shootout, and the Philadelph­ia Flyers beat the Minnesota Wild 5-4 on Thursday night for coach John Tortorella's 700th career victory.

Tortorella is 700-573-181 in 1,454 games as an NHL head coach. His 700 wins rank 12th in NHL history and his career games rank ninth in NHL history. He led Tampa Bay to the Stanley Cup in 2004 and is in his first season coaching the Flyers. Tortorella joined Peter Laviolette as the second American-born coach to win 700 games.

Scott Laughton, Joel Farabee, Rasmus Ristolaine­n and Tyson Foerster scored for the Flyers.

Matt Boldy had two goals for the Wild, and Oskar Sundqvist and Marcus Foligno also scored.

CAPITALS 6, BLACKHAWKS 1 >> John Carlson had a goal and an assist in his return from a fractured skull as Washington beat Chicago.

Alex Ovechkin and Nicklas Backstrom also had a goal and an assist, helping Washington move within four points of Pittsburgh for the second wild card in the Eastern Conference.

BRUINS 4, CANADIENS 2 >> David Pastrnak scored his 49th goal, Tyler Bertuzzi had a goal and an assist and Boston overcame a sluggish performanc­e for their fifth straight victory.

Jake DeBrusk and David Krejci also scored for the Bruins, who, while denied a chance to clinch the Atlantic Division when Toronto beat Florida, improved to 5511-5 and remained on pace to break the league record of 62 wins in a season.

BLUES 4, RED WINGS 3 >> Sammy Blais scored the go-ahead goal, Joel Hofer made 27 saves and St. Louis held off Detroit.

Alexey Toropchenk­o, Brayden Schenn and Jake Neighbours also scored for St. Louis, which avenged a loss to Detroit on Tuesday night.

RANGERS 2, HURRICANES 1 >> Adam Fox ended a 24-game stretch without a goal and New York overcame Carolina in a battle of Metropolit­an Division contenders.

Artemi Panarin also scored and assisted on the goalahead goal, and Igor Shesterkin made 29 saves.

The Hurricanes could have clinched an Eastern Conference playoff spot with a victory.

MAPLE LEAFS 6, PANTHERS 2 >> Auston Matthews had two goals and Mitch Marner, William Nylander each had a goal and an assist and John Tavares finished with three assists as Toronto won for the third time in four games

Eric and Marc Staal of the Panthers declined to wear special Pride-themed warmup jerseys ahead of team's game in support of the area's LGBTQ community. The brothers cited their religion as the reason for their decision.

SENATORS 7, LIGHTNING 2 >> Alex DeBrincat and Brady Tkachuk each scored two goals and Ottawa cruised past Tampa Bay.

It was the Senators' 35th win, the team's most since 2015-16.

The Lightning are on a three-game losing streak and have been outscored 15-6 during that stretch.

MCDAVID NETS 60TH >> Connor McDavid scored his 60th goal of the season with his second of the game 1:31 into overtime, lift the Edmonton to a 4-3 victory over the Arizona late Wednesday night.

Moments after hitting the post, McDavid went high on Connor Ingram, giving him 60 goals in 72 games and making him the fastest player to reach the mark since Mario Lemieux accomplish­ed the feat in 62 games in the 1995-96 season.

“I kind of felt like I was pressing for the 60th all night,” said McDavid, who became the first player in NHL history to score his 60th in overtime. “Getting 60, a lot of great players in the past have done it and it feels good to join that list.”

McDavid extended his points streak at home to 16 games with his first goal of the game.
