Boys injured in West Oakland shooting
Two boys were wounded in a shooting Thursday after the stolen car they were passengers in was struck by bullets in a West Oakland neighborhood, authorities said.
The driver of the car was being sought Friday, police said.
The shooting happened around 12:30 p.m. Thursday in the 3000 block of Chestnut Street.
Police said at least one person on the street began shooting at a blue Hyundai Elantra — which police said had been stolen earlier in the day in Oakland — that had the 12 and 14-year-old Oakland boys as passengers.
The car was hit several times, including on the driver's side and rear window and tires. But the driver was still able to make it to the intersection of 28th and Chestnut streets, outside McClymonds High School's athletic field, where the car stopped and the occupants fled on foot, authorities said.
The two wounded boys were found by police at the intersection of 28th and Myrtle streets suffering from gunshot wounds to their legs. They were taken to a hospital for treatment.
Streets in the area — a primarily residential neighborhood — were shut down while police recovered evidence and canvassed for witnesses and video surveillance.
Investigators were trying to determine if the vehicle theft had anything to do with the shooting. Both the shooting and theft remain under investigation and no arrests have been announced.
For information leading to the arrest of a suspect, police are offering up to $10,000 in the shooting. Anyone with information may call police at 510-2383426 or Crime Stoppers of Oakland at 510-777-8572.
