A 31-year-old Pittsburg man died Thursday in a three-car crash on Highway 4, the latest fatality on a highway that has seen seven people die this year, including three in a 10-day span.

Authorities early Friday identified the man as Taylor Bustos.

The crash happened about 5:50 p.m. in the eastbound direction of the highway where it passes over Interstate 680, California Highway Patrol Officer Adam Lane said in a statement.

A gray Toyota Highlander crashed into a Toyota Camry that was stopped for traffic.

The collision propelled the Camry into the concrete center divider and off a Gray Mazda 3 that also was stopped for traffic.

Bustos was in the Camry. He died after being rushed to a hospital. A driver and passenger in the Highlander suffered what Lane called minor injuries. The driver of the Gray Mazda was its only occupant and was not injured.

The crash was the sixth fatal one on the highway in 2023 and the 10th since Nov. 16 when three children were among five people killed in a head-on collision in Pittsburg. Two people died two days apart following a May 9 wreck on the highway, the only multi-fatality this year.

According to a count by this news organization, the fatal wreck was the 37th on the freeway since the start of 2021 and 42 people have died in those crashes.

The CHP issued a Sig-alert for severe traffic at 6:08 p.m., advising drivers and residents to avoid the area due to the collision. They lifted the alert at 7:31 p.m.

Anyone with information may call the CHP's Contra Costa office at 925-646-4980.
