OAKLAND >> A city resident has been arrested and charged with murder in connection with the recent shooting death of a 27-year-old Antioch man, court records show.

Danery QuinonezVasquez, 27, was charged Wednesday with a single count, murder, in the May 6 shooting death of Mitchell Monroe. QuinonezVasquez was arrested Tuesday at his Oakland home and is being held in Santa Rita Jail in Dublin without bail, records show.

Monroe, a father of two girls ages 6 and 1, was shot and killed shortly before 4 a.m. near the Interstate 580 Keller Avenue exit. Police say that there is evidence Monroe may have been following his alleged killer on the freeway, but authorities haven't said exactly what led to the shooting.

Video surveillance shows the shooter pulling up in a pickup truck and waiting on Keller Avenue for about two minutes before Monroe arrived, police say. When QuinonezVasquez was interviewed, he reportedly told police he parked his vehicle, waited for Monroe's vehicle to arrive, then fired as Monroe drove through an intersection.

The murder charge does include an enhancement alleging Quinonez-Vasquez personally used a firearm to kill Monroe, which can add 25 years to QuinonezVasquez's sentence if he's convicted.

Quinonez-Vasquez had his first court appearance Wednesday, where he was formally informed of the charge, but he has not yet entered a plea, according to court records. Assuming he pleads not guilty, the next major stage of the case will be his preliminary hearing, where a judge will review evidence and determine if there's enough to uphold the charge.
