Quakes lose season opener after late goal by FC Dallas

-

The San Jose Earthquakes' MLS season opener was spoiled when Dante Sealy found the net in the fourth minute of stoppage time to lead FC Dallas to a 2-1 victory in Frisco, Texas.

Sealy scored his second career goal before time expired on Saturday night, denying San Jose a tie to begin the season.

“I felt really good about what we did for 93 minutes,” Quakes coach Luchi Gonzalez said. “I liked a lot of the pressure we got on the ball. … We still need to keep working on some quality when the game gets a little chaotic.”

San Jose jumped out to a 1-0 lead just six minutes into the match on a goal by Benjamin Kikanovic, matching his total in 24 appearances last season.

Dallas pulled even in the 25th minute on Asier Illarramendi's first career goal. Illarramendi notched an assist in seven starts and 11 appearances last year in his first season.

Daniel De Sousa Britto saved seven shots for the Earthquakes.

San Jose's next game will be on Saturday when it travels to play the Los Angeles Galaxy.

FUROR ERUPTS OVER RONALDO'S APPARENT OBSCENE TAUNT >> Cristiano Ronaldo has come under heavy criticism after seemingly making an offensive gesture following Al Nassr's 3-2 victory over Al Shabab in a Saudi Pro League match on Sunday.

The Portuguese star scored a first half penalty, before Brazilian Talisca's late brace, including a goal four minutes from time, secured the win for Al Nassr.

After the final whistle, videos posted on social media showed the five-time Ballon d'Or winner cupping his ear and repeatedly thrusting his hand forward near his pelvis, seemingly aimed at rival Al Shabab supporters.

Motorsports SUAREZ EDGES BLANEY, BUSCH FOR THRILLING NASCAR WIN >>

Daniel Suarez edged Ryan Blaney and Kyle Busch in a three-wide finish to win a crashed-filled NASCAR Cup Series race at Atlanta Motor Speedway.

Busch, who won Saturday's Trucks race, moved to the middle between Blaney, the 2023 Cup champion, and Suarez to set up the dramatic finish. Suarez, 32, earned his second career Cup win in his Trackhouse Racing

Chevrolet. Blaney was second, only 0.003 seconds behind, and Busch was third.

There were 10 cautions and an Atlanta-record 47 lead changes.

A massive pileup of at least 16 cars on the second lap was the biggest in the history of Atlanta Motor Speedway and set the pace for a procession of wrecks. The crash left many cars heavily taped for the remainder of the afternoon.

The intensity picked up when Austin Cindric went to the bottom of the track in his Team Penske Ford for a four-wide pass to take the lead with 50 laps remaining.

Tight racing led to the eighth caution of the day when Kyle Larson and Brad Keselowski were part of a crash. Another crash with 21 laps remaining ended Chase Briscoe's race and damaged the hopes of Denny Hamlin, who had been a top contender.

Golf ROOKIE KNAPP WINS MEXICO OPEN >>

PGA Tour rookie Jake Knapp lost a four-shot lead in seven holes and then held it together with a remarkable short game, closing with an even-par 71 to win the Mexico Open and earn a trip to the Masters.

Knapp said he still sends a text after each round to his grandfather, who died last year, and this message might require a lot of detail.

He didn't hit a fairway until the eighth hole and found only two the entire round. The former UCLA player never lost the lead, but twice allowed Sami Valimaki of Finland to catch him.

They were tied with six holes to play until Knapp took over, getting up-and-down on four of the next five holes, one of them for birdie. It wasn't easy until the end.

Another big par save on the par-3 17th gave him a two-shot lead going to the par-5 18th at Vallarta Vidanta. Valimaki, needing eagle to have a chance, hit his drive down the right side, off a cart path and it nestled next to a boundary fence. He had to take a penalty drop, effectively ending his chances. Valimaki made par for a 69.

Knapp, who finished at 19-under 265, won in his fifth start of his rookie season. Along with winning $1,458,000 and moving into the top 10 in the FedEx Cup, the 29-year-old Californian is headed to the Masters and PGA Championship. TAVATANAKIT GETS ONE-SHOT LPGA VICTORY >> Local favorite Patty Tavatanakit closed with a 5-under 67 and held off a hard-charging Albane Valenzuela of Switzerland for a one-shot victory in the Honda LPGA Thailand.

Tavatanakit was coming off a Ladies European Tour victory last week in Saudi Arabia. She hit a superb approach for an easy birdie on the final hole to finish at 21-under 267. It was her first LPGA title since winning the ANA Inspiration in 2021 for her first major.

Valenzuela had a 63, including six birdies on the back nine, to finish alone in second.

Sei Young Kim, the 2020 Women's PGA Championship winner, shot a 65 and tied for third with Hye-jin Choi.
