Ohtani goes deep as Dodgers beat Twins

-

Shohei Ohtani had two doubles and a home run — his third in five games — to power the visiting Los Angeles Dodgers past the Minnesota Twins 4-2 on Monday night.

James Outman hit the go-ahead homer in the seventh and Freddie Freeman and Will Smith drove in runs to fuel another smooth win for Dodgers newcomer James Paxton (2-0).

Manny Margot hit a two-run homer to give the Twins a third-inning lead, but the loaded Dodgers lineup was too much for a depleted bullpen after starter Bailey Ober deftly worked to depart with one run allowed in five innings.

YANKEES 7, MARLINS 0 >> Juan Soto and Anthony Volpe each hit a three-run homer in the fourth inning off Jesús Luzardo, and New York blanked Miami at Yankee Stadium.

New York improved to 9-2 and matched the best 11-game start in team history.

A day after winning in St. Louis, the Marlins dropped to 1-10 for the first time since they lost 11 in a row after an opening victory in 1998.

Nelson Cortes (1-1) allowed two hits, struck out six and walked none over eight innings.

Luzardo (0-3) allowed seven runs, eight hits and five walks in 4 2/3 innings.

PIRATES 7, TIGERS 4 >> Bryan Reynolds hit his 100th career home run, Connor Joe and Jared Triolo both had two hits and two RBIs and Pittsburgh won at home over Detroit.

Joey Bart also drove in two runs for the Pirates, who improved to an NL-best 9-2.

Mitch Keller (1-1) allowed two runs on five hits with three walks and nine strikeouts.

Reese Olson (0-1) allowed six runs on nine hits with three walks in 4 1/3 innings as Detroit has dropped four of five after starting 5-0.

REDS 10, BREWERS 8 >> Elly De La Cruz hit his first two homers of the season, a massive 450foot solo drive and a sinking liner that turned into his first career inside-the-park drive, and Cincinnati held off visiting Milwaukee.

De La Cruz had three hits and scored four times. Will Benson also homered for the Reds.

Milwaukee's Brice Turang hit a two-run homer in the fifth and a two-run double in the sixth. Christian Yelich's two-run shot in the seventh got the Brewers within one.

GUARDIANS 4, WHITE SOX 0 >> José Ramírez hit a two-run homer and Cleveland won in first-year manager Stephen Vogt's home debut, beating Chicago to improve to 8-2.

The White Sox dropped their fifth straight to fall to 1-9. They were shut for the fourth time and have scored an MLB-low 16 runs.

BLUE JAYS 5, MARINERS 2 >> José Berríos pitched 6 2/3 shutout innings, Davis Schneider hit a two-run single and Toronto won its home opener over Seattle.

ASTROS' VALDEZ MISSES START >> The Houston Astros scratched All-Star left-hander Framber Valdez from his scheduled start Monday against Texas because of left elbow soreness.

Valdez returned to Houston for further evaluation by doctors. He first reported being sore around the top of his elbow after playing catch Sunday, then felt the same Monday.

Valdez had no-decisions with a 2.19 ERA in his first two starts, both Houston losses.

After going 17-6 and leading the American League with 201 1/3 innings pitched in 2022, Valdez was 12-11 with a 3.45 ERA last season.
