Kate Powers is having a solid season in Albany

Redshirt junior Kate Powers is having a solid season pitching for New York’s University at Albany softball team.

The 5-foot-9 right-hander from Hope Valley and a Chariho Regional graduate has a 5-2 record with a save in 10 games and eight starts. She has six complete games and three shutouts – 2-0 over Wisconsin of the Big Ten Conference and 6-0 over Maine and 8-0 over Umass-lowell, both America East Conference games.

Powers has a 1.92 earned run average and a .90 WHIP. In 51 innings, she has given up 28 hits and 15 runs, 14 earned, with 18 walks and 29 strikeouts. In her three seasons with the team, she has a 16-9 record with three saves and five shutouts in 46 games with 26 starts.

The Great Danes are 1810 overall and 7-4 in America East play after a 7-6 conference loss to Bryant last Sunday in Smithtown.

Molly Sullivan (North

Kingstown)

The sophomore set a program record when she finished fourth in the 3,000-meter steeplecha­se for the Davidson (N.C.) women’s track team at the Duke Invitation­al last weekend in Durham, N.C. Her time was 10:51.52. The North Kingstown High graduate bettered the previous record by 17 seconds. Prior to the Duke meet, Sullivan had a second and third in that event this spring. She also opened the season by finishing second in the 3,000-meter run in the Charlotte 49er Classic March 16.

Sam Maciel (Narraganse­tt)

The senior scored two goals, but it wasn’t enough as the Assumption men’s lacrosse team dropped a 17-9 Northeast-10 Conference decision to eighth-ranked Saint Anselm on the home field last Saturday in Worcester, Mass., the Greyhounds 5-5 overall and 2-4 in conference play. The La Salle Academy graduate has started all 10 games and has 15 goals and two assists. He had four goals in a 15-12 victory over Roberts Wesleyan on March 1 and three goals and an assist in a 15-13 loss to St. Michael’s on April 3.

Carter Sheehan (Middletown)

The freshman, a graduate of The Prout School, is a key performer with the Roger Williams sailing team, the Hawks finishing seventh with a 4-10 record at the Thompson Trophy regatta last weekend in New London, Conn. Sheehan is a member of the crew on the boat which topped Division I Rhode Island and Bowdoin last Saturday and scored victories over Division I Pennsylvan­ia and Bowdoin last Sunday. On April 6-7 the boat posted a 16-5 record at the Mystic Lake Team Race in Medford, Mass.

Keara Fontaine (North

Kingstown)

The graduate student has set personal records in three events in the past three meets for the Eastern Connecticu­t women’s track team. The North Kingstown High graduate started the string when she finished seventh in the 10,000-meter run at the Wesleyan Invitation­al on March 23 with a time of 40:25.48. She followed that up by finishing 10th in the 1,500 at the Corsair Open on March 30 with a time of 5:18.59. Last weekend, she was 15th in the 5,000 at the Silfen Invitation­al with a time of 19:16.33.

Spencer Hallagan (East

Greenwich)

The 6-foot-3, 220-pound junior attack has played in nine games off the bench for the Muhlenberg (Pa.) men’s lacrosse team, the Mules 7-7 overall and 4-2 in the Centennial Conference after a 12-11 overtime victory at Gettysburg in a conference game last Saturday. The East Greenbush High graduate has three goals and three assists. He had two goals in a 17-6 conference victory over Mcdaniel on April 6. Hallagan played a total of nine games in his first two seasons with the team.

Cole Podedworny (Wakefield)

The senior is hitting .347 for the Rhode Island College baseball team, the Anchormen 12-11 overall and 2-6 in the Little East Conference. The South Kingstown High graduate has 33 hits in 95 at-bats with six doubles, a triple, three home runs, 17 runs scored and 23 runs batted in. Senior Sean Helfrich of Saundersto­wn (La Salle Academy) is hitting .279 (24-for-86) while sophomore left-hander Devyn Glenn of West Warwick (Bishop Hendricken High) is 1-0 pitching in five games in relief.

Matt Reilly (North Kingstown)

The 6-foot-3, 205-pound senior midfielder had his biggest scoring game of the season and his career for the Clarkson men’s lacrosse team. The North Kingstown High graduate had six goals and an assist in a 12-10 victory over St. John Fisher on April 3 in a home game in Potsdam, N.Y. He scored his team’s final two goals. Reilly leads the Golden Knights in scoring with 38 points on 27 goals and 11 assists. In 54 career games, he has 89 goals

and 38 assists for 127 points.

Owen Georgio (East

Greenwich)

The 5-foot-8 freshman is having a big year for the Husson (Maine) men’s lacrosse team. The La Salle Academy graduate is second on the team in ground balls with 64 and leads in caused turnovers with 41. On offense, he has 19 points on 10 goals and nine assists with a game winner. Georgio had 12 ground balls in an 11-7 victory over Brevard on March 8. The Eagles are 4-8 after topping Thomas 11-7 in a North Atlantic Conference game on April 11. Georgio picked up nine ground balls and forced four caused turnovers in the game.

Ellie Lyons (Charlestow­n)

The 5-foot-8 senior co-captain has started all 12 games on defense for the Keene State women’s lacrosse team, the Owls 8-4 overall and 3-1 in the Little East Conference after a 22-9 conference victory over Castleton on Tuesday in Castleton, Vt. The Chariho Regional graduate has 24 ground balls and is third on the team in caused turnovers with 16. She has turned over the ball just 10 times. Lyons hasn’t taken a shot on goal this season and hasn’t taken a shot in 56 career games.
