Heath part of Sacred Heart’s one-two pitching punch

Sophomore Emily Heath is part of a one-two pitching punch for the Sacred Heart softball team.

The right-hander from Coventry and a Sr. Mary Academy-bay View graduate is 11-10 with two saves in 31 games and 22 starts for the Pioneers who are 25-26 overall and clinched a berth in the Northeast Conference Tournament with a 16-8 record.

Heath has a 2.42 earned run average with a solid 1.27 WHIP. In 144.1 innings, she has given up 129 hits and 68 runs, 50 earned, with 54 walks and 85 strikeouts. She had 11 complete games with two shutouts.

This has been a breakout season for Heath who posted a 5-5 record in 16 games with a 2.97 earned run average as a freshman.

The Pioneers are seeded third in the NEC Tournament which starts next Thursday in Loreto, Pa. and Heath, along with sophomore Sam Kowalski of San Clemente, Calif., will share the starting pitching duties in the tourney. She has a 14-11 record with a save.

LJ Raye (West Warwick)

The senior won two events to help the Thomas men’s track team finish third in the North Atlantic Conference Championsh­ip last weekend in Oneonta, N.Y. The versatile West Warwick High graduate captured the 100-meter dash in 10.60 which was a personal record and a new meet standard. He also finished first in the long jump with a leap of 22 feet, 1 ¾ inches. Raye is currently ranked third in the 100 and 13th in the long jump on the Division III East performanc­e list.

Matthew Steele (North

Kingstown)

Regional

The freshman finished second behind a junior teammate in the triple jump at the college’s James Barber Invite last Saturday in New Haven, Conn. The Bishop Hendricken High graduate had a leap of 44 feet. 7 inches. He had a second, three fourths in that event and finished first in the Northeast-10 Indoor Championsh­ip last February with a personal record time of 46 feet, 7 ¼ inches. Steele also finished fifth in the long jump at the Barber meet with a 22foot-3 ¾-inch effort.

Grace Dobrzynski Greenwich)

The junior attack was named to the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference first team last Friday after a standout season with the Siena (N.Y.) women’s lacrosse team. The La Salle Academy graduate scored 83 points on 24 goals and 59 assists. The assists set a conference season record. The Saints finished the regular season with a 13-5 record and as the third seed, they opened the conference tourney with a 9-6 win over Canisius last Sunday. Dobrzynski was injured midway through the first period and didn’t return.

Shamus Culhane (North

Kingstown)

The Rhode Island College sophomore, a North Kingstown High graduate, captured the hammer throw at the Little East Conference Championsh­ip last Saturday in North Dartmouth, Mass. He had a toss of 175 feet, 8 inches. Sophomore Brandon Mota (West Warwick High) finished third with a personal best toss of 168 feet, 2 inches. Sophomore Ben Lockwood (The Prout School) was fourth in the 3,000-meter steeplecha­se with a personal best time of 10:09.64. RIC finished sixth out of eight teams.

Reece Fahys (East Greenwich)

The freshman finally competed in her first outdoor track meet for the Providence women at the Umass Flagship Indoor Invitation­al on April 14 in Amherst. She finished fifth out of 41 entrants in the 3,000-meter run with a time of 9:48.85. She was the fourth collegiate finisher. The East Greenwich High graduate didn’t compete for the Friars during the indoor season, but ran in six meets with the cross country team last fall.

Fran O’kleasky (Coventry)

The junior shortstop is having a solid year with the Drew (N.J.) softball team, the Rangers 20-16 overall and 6-8 in the Landmark Conference. The Coventry High graduate is hitting .298 (28-for-94) witnh a team-high 10 doubles, a home run, 19 runs scored with a team-high 24 runs batted in. O’kleasky has had nine hits in 24 at-bats in the team last seven games and she had three hits in three different games during the season. Drew faces conference foe Wilkes in a doublehead­er Saturday with an outside chance to make the playoffs.

Seb Carlsson

(Narraganse­tt)

The freshman finished 48th for the Rhode Island men’s golf team at the Atlantic 10 Conference Championsh­ip earlier this week in Orlando, Fla. The Narraganse­tt High graduate had a 237 total on rounds of 81, 76 and 80. He

the third Rams finisher, the team 10th out of 12 teams. Carlsson played in five tourneys during the fall and spring season and in 14 rounds he averaged 77.3 and had a season-low score of 73.

Keara Fontaine (North

Kingstown)

The graduate student finished second in the 10,000-meter run to help the Eastern Connecticu­t women’s track team finish second in the Little East Conference Championsh­ip last Saturday in North Dartmouth, Mass. The North Kingstown High graduate posted a personal record time of 39:58.85. She also finished sixth in the 5,000-meter run in 20:20.25. Junior teammate Analiese Poisson (North Kingstown High) finished fifth in the 100-meter hurdles (17.88) and seventh in the 400-meter hurdles (1:19.58).

Kyle Ackroyd (Charlestow­n)

The sophomore captured the 10,000-meter run to help the Bridgewate­r State men’s track team capture the Massachuse­tts Collegiate Athletic Conference Championsh­ip last Friday. He covered the distance with a personal record time of 32:49.28. The Chariho Regional graduate finished second in that event in the championsh­ip last year as a freshman. Ackroyd won the 5,000-meter run (15:54.59) at the MASCAC Indoor Championsh­ip last February and was second in the conference cross country meet last October.
