Sunscreen Smarts

EatingWell - - LETTERS -

I’m an avid reader and scuba diver. Your sunscreen article [Fresh Fix] was good from a human-health standpoint, but it failed to mention that some sunscreens can damage coral reefs. Hawaii legislators recently passed a bill banning the sale and distribution of sunscreens containing oxybenzone and octinoxate. Other island nations are following suit. The U.S. National Park Service for South Florida, Hawaii, U.S. Virgin Islands and American Samoa recommends using “reef friendly” sunscreens made with titanium oxide or zinc oxide.
