What is the best way to tell audiences coverage is being canceled?

-

When you stop covering something, be as honest as you can about the reason. Are you canceling coverage because it’s just not getting much readership? Because it’s not being read by your most loyal, paying audience? Or because your staff is shrinking? Don’t just hope the audience doesn’t notice.

Explain your decisions, wherever works for you:

• in an editor’s note at the top of related

stories

• in a box next to related stories

• in an editor’s column

• in a social media post or comment or in a newsletter

Be sure to share the explanations repeatedly, rather than assuming everyone saw your one mention of it. And ask for feedback every time, with contact information for a specific staff member.
