Challenging Times Play to our Strength
In the June issue of Editor & Publisher, I read the article titled, Supply Chain Blues, which described the supply chain challenges present in our industry. The article included quotes from publishers on how they are adapting with shortages and delays of deliveries for the commodities they need to print the paper.
Among the key themes presented by the publishers interviewed, were anticipation and communication to both their suppliers for the materials and the advertisers and readers who rely on the delivery of the paper.
Those themes resonated with me as they were among the primary reasons why The PAGE Cooperative was first established in 1984. Namely as a centralized point of contact between the members (newspaper publishers) and their key suppliers.
Of course, the first benefit that comes to mind for PAGE members is pricing, as the Cooperative’s purchasing power of
450 active newspaper members provides the leverage for publishers of any size to obtain lower prices through PAGE.
However, this article on the supply chain blues highlighted another benefit of being a member of the PAGE Cooperative. Namely, you can contact PAGE for urgent problems of this nature to seek advice and assistance.
The PAGE Cooperative throughout its history has built and fostered a collaborative win-win relationship with PAGE approved vendors. This special relationship has enabled PAGE during these tumultuous times to connect with the suppliers and assist wherever possible for PAGE members. Acting as a centralized point of contact, PAGE can liaise with PAGE suppliers to intercede, address, and sometimes resolve an urgent issue. We have now several examples of how PAGE came to the rescue for its members.
PAGE has fostered this special relationship with its vendors based on the benefits the partners receive in working with PAGE.
There is naturally the volume of orders suppliers receive from PAGE members but equally valuable is the prompt payment of their invoices. Because the orders flow through PAGE, no time or resources is incurred by the supplier to collect receivables and the Cooperative assumes the full credit risk and pays all invoices within 30 days. This is a significant savings for PAGE suppliers.
This recent article and our supply chain challenges was a reminder that PAGE is also a hotline for its members to ask PAGE to investigate, intercede and assist where possible by leveraging the longstanding relationships the Cooperative has with its Suppliers.
