Dr. Joe Lee Hathcote
Dr. Joe Lee Hathcote, of Benton, passed away Sunday, Aug. 25, at the age of 100.
He was born Jan. 26, 1919, in Benton, the son of Joseph W. and Wilma L. Hathcote, married in October 1948 to Clara Williams in Benton. He was a graduate of the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville, and received his dental degree from the University of Missouri Kansas City School of Dentistry. He practiced dentistry for approximately 30 years in Benton, before retiring. During the latter part of his career, he was a member of the staff at the University of Missouri Kansas City School of Dentistry and retired in 1982 as an associate professor in the Department of Crown and Bridge. He was a life member of the American Dental Association, Arkansas Dental Association, Missouri Dental Association and Central District Dental Society.
He was a veteran of World War II for five years, and served more than 26 months overseas, in two tours of duty in the Aleutian Islands, New Guinea, and the Philippine Islands. A member of V.F.W., he was also an avid golfer and a longtime member of Longhills Golf Club. He enjoyed gardening and woodworking in his retirement. He was a member of the University of Arkansas Alumni Association and a former Rotary Club member.
He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Clara Hathcote; a son, Greg Hathcote and wife, Cindi; and a daughter, Gail Wright and husband, Anthony, all of Benton; three grandchildren, Wesley Hathcote and wife, Nicole, Coleby Wright and wife, Linda, and Samantha Stogsdill and husband,
Oliver; and four great-grandchildren, Shelby Hathcote, Will Hathcote, Hudson Wright and John Wright.
Pallbearers are Wesley Hathcote, Will Hathcote, Coleby Wright, Oliver Stogsdill, Paul Heacox and Jim Whipple.
A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday,
Aug. 29, at Smith-rosemont Cemetery. Minister will be Dr. Michael Reese.
Visitation will be held from 1 to 2 p.m. prior to the service at Ashby Funeral Home.
