Dr. Joe Lee Hath­cote

Dr. Joe Lee Hath­cote, of Benton, passed away Sun­day, Aug. 25, at the age of 100.

He was born Jan. 26, 1919, in Benton, the son of Joseph W. and Wilma L. Hath­cote, mar­ried in Oc­to­ber 1948 to Clara Wil­liams in Benton. He was a grad­u­ate of the Univer­sity of Arkansas at Fayettevil­le, and re­ceived his den­tal de­gree from the Univer­sity of Mis­souri Kansas City School of Den­tistry. He prac­ticed den­tistry for ap­prox­i­mately 30 years in Benton, be­fore re­tir­ing. Dur­ing the lat­ter part of his ca­reer, he was a mem­ber of the staff at the Univer­sity of Mis­souri Kansas City School of Den­tistry and re­tired in 1982 as an as­so­ciate pro­fes­sor in the Depart­ment of Crown and Bridge. He was a life mem­ber of the Amer­i­can Den­tal As­so­ci­a­tion, Arkansas Den­tal As­so­ci­a­tion, Mis­souri Den­tal As­so­ci­a­tion and Central Dis­trict Den­tal So­ci­ety.

He was a vet­eran of World War II for five years, and served more than 26 months over­seas, in two tours of duty in the Aleu­tian Is­lands, New Guinea, and the Philip­pine Is­lands. A mem­ber of V.F.W., he was also an avid golfer and a long­time mem­ber of Longhills Golf Club. He en­joyed gar­den­ing and wood­work­ing in his retirement. He was a mem­ber of the Univer­sity of Arkansas Alumni As­so­ci­a­tion and a for­mer Ro­tary Club mem­ber.

He is sur­vived by his wife of 70 years, Clara Hath­cote; a son, Greg Hath­cote and wife, Cindi; and a daugh­ter, Gail Wright and hus­band, An­thony, all of Benton; three grand­chil­dren, Wes­ley Hath­cote and wife, Ni­cole, Coleby Wright and wife, Linda, and Samantha Stogs­dill and hus­band,

Oliver; and four great-grand­chil­dren, Shelby Hath­cote, Will Hath­cote, Hudson Wright and John Wright.

Pall­bear­ers are Wes­ley Hath­cote, Will Hath­cote, Coleby Wright, Oliver Stogs­dill, Paul Hea­cox and Jim Whip­ple.

A grave­side ser­vice will be held at 2 p.m. Thurs­day,

Aug. 29, at Smith-rose­mont Ceme­tery. Min­is­ter will be Dr. Michael Reese.

Visi­ta­tion will be held from 1 to 2 p.m. prior to the ser­vice at Ashby Funeral Home.
