Hornets take 5th at state
HOT SPRINGS – The Bryant Hornets cross country team wrapped up their season in fine fashion this past Saturday, taking a fifth place at the Arkansas State Cross Country Championships at Oaklawn Park in Hot Springs, while the Bryant girls took eighth overall.
The Hornets 149 points were good for fifth, while Bentonville took the state title with 30 points. Fayetteville (36) was a close second, while Springdale Har-ber (89) and Conway (138) rounded out the top four.
“This was a tremendous way to finish the season,” Bryant Coach Steve Oury said. “We saved our best for last, and a top-five finish was our reward. We looked at Cabot, Bentonville West and Rogers as teams that we could beat if we ran our best, but we also knew that all three of those teams would be ahead of us if we had an average day. To beat all three of them was the icing on the cake.”
Bryant picked up two top-20 finishes with junior Hagan Austin leading the way with a 16th place in a time of 16:22.20, with twin brother Bresner Austin taking 20th overall in 16:39.30. Bentonville’s Lukas Pabst took the top spot in a time of 15:21.90.
“Hagan Austin ran the race of his life,” Oury said, “and Bresner Austin was right there with him.”
Hornet sophomore Chris Herrera followed with a 30th-place spot in a time of 16:54.80, while junior Luis Martinez (39th - 17:17.30) and senior Christian Brack (47th - 17:27.20) rounded Bryant’s scoring with top-50 finishes.
“Chris Herrera ran under 17 minutes for the first time, and Luis Martinez and Christian Brack did a great job of rounding out our top five,” Oury said. “I couldn’t be prouder of all the guys who competed for us today.”
Senior Ethan Saffle
(64th - 17:45.20), senior Ethan Ives (89th - 18:27.60), sophomore Cam Apel (98th 18:45.10) and junior Ammon
Henderson (108th - 19:06.50) also competed at state.
For the girls, the Lady Hornets took eighth overall with 254 points, with Bentonville taking the team title with 36 points. Fayetteville was a close second with 38 points, with Rogers (51), Bentonville West (150) and Har-ber
(150) rounding out the top five.
