Bauxite pulls away late from HG
HASKELL – The Bauxite Lady Miners (5-2) were able to advance to the championship game of the 12th annual Bill Gibbs Memorial Tournament after a 52-37 win over the Harmony Grove Lady Cardinals (2-5) at
Daniel Henley Fieldhouse in Haskell.
“I think Harmony Grove did really well. They forced us into a lot of turnovers and bad decisions early,” said Bauxite Head Coach Spencer Gay. “Hats off to them for making it tough on us.”
Both teams came out of the gate swinging, shooting extremely well from the field. Bauxite senior center Lauren Bainter started things off by getting inside the Lady Cardinal defense for two easy looks. Then, senior guard Erika Qualls would strike
Harmony Grove senior guard Kailey Southerland would respond by hitting back-to-back corner threes. As time expired in the quarter, Lady Miner junior guard Olivia Mcdade would also knock down a three. Both teams combined for four total 3-point baskets as Bauxite would lead 15-14 after one quarter.
The Lady Cardinals would continue their hot streak from long range to start the second quarter. Sophomore guard Kallyn Sossaman and junior forward Destiny Clegg knocked down backto-back 3-pointers.
The pace of the game would slow down and begin to become a back-and-forth contest, with both teams struggling to take care of the ball on offense. “Too many turnovers and we gave them way too many offensive rebounds,” said dejected Harmony Grove Coach Levi Spinks. The Lady Cardinals would overcome the sloppy play to take a 24-18 lead into halftime.
In the second half the momentum would begin to slowly shift toward the Lady Miners. “There was a little halftime adjustment,” said Gay. “We kind of set back in the first half, but kind of changed some things like full-court pressing them. That was the game.”
Bauxite’s full-court press began to force turnovers and
create opportunities on the offensive end. The young Lady Cardinal team would be held to only 10 points in the second half while allowing 34 points. Lady Miner center Lauren Bainter would lead the scoring barrage by putting up an impressive 18 points in the second half.
With the loss, the Lady Cardinals move to the thirdplace game of the Bill Gibbs
Memorial Tournament. They’re scheduled to face the Poyen Lady Indians (3-1) on Saturday at 3:30 p.m.
The Lady Miners are scheduled to play the
Lady Warhawks (11-1) on Saturday at 6 p.m. in the championship game at the Daniel Henley Fieldhouse.
Bauxite senior Lauren Bainter, 44, goes up for a shot in a game earlier this season. Bainter had a big second half to help the Lady Miners to a 52-37 victory over Harmony Grove in the semifinals of the Bill Gibbs Memorial Tournament Thursday in Haskell.
