No luck on opening weekend

-

Opening weekend of muzzleloader deer season was nice, but I didn’t see anything to put in the freezer.

I saw tons of deer and they were almost all does with fawns.

I saw a couple of young bucks that were only sporting spikes or were just nubbin heads.

The does are definitely fattening back up and will be good for meat come colder weather.

I had a young buck come through and make a couple of scrapes and rub one tree.

They are getting ready for pre-rut activity!

I hope that the cold weather this weekend will get the bucks up and moving better.

Trying to hunt this weekend in the mornings was great, but afternoon hunting was almost unbearable. I took my boots and socks off and rolled my pants legs up to my knees just to stay cool.

With some rain projected for today and cooler temperatures all weekend, evening hunting will be better!

Mosquitoes will not be a problem and I hope snakes get the idea that it will be time to hibernate soon.

This weekend, my friend Katie will be attempting to take a deer with a muzzleloader.

What could be more fun than two Katies in the woods?

She took a nice doe last year during modern gun and I hope she gets to score again this weekend.

The possibilities this weekend are endless so see next week’s column for the results of Katie and Katie take on the Great Outdoors.

I have a feeling it will be worth a few laughs.

I just hope neither one of us trip over an armadillo or fall in while crossing the creek!

I know if the opportunity presents itself, we will do some hog exterminating!

Have a great weekend everyone and be safe in the woods!

Make sure you wear your orange this weekend whether you are bow hunting or muzzleloading.

The doe-only private land modern gun season will be open from October 29-November 2.

Modern gun will open on November 12 and duck season opens on November 19.
