Ward 3 cleanup to be held on Saturday

EL DORADO — The plans have been made and the date set for the second annual Ward Three community cleanup, and the public, particularly residents and businesses in the ward, are encouraged to participate.

The cleanup is scheduled for 9 a.m. until noon on Saturday, and a cookout will follow at Mattocks Park, Ward Three Alderman Kensel Spivey announced.

Spivey and her co-Alderman Willie McGhee have been working with Clean Harbors to organize the event.

Clean Harbors partnered with the city officials for a cleanup in Ward Three last year.

Former Ward Three alderman and Clean Harbors employee Tony Henry was also instrumental in planning the 2016 cleanup, which drew between 200 and 300 people.

Spivey said she is hoping for the same number of volunteers or more this year.

“I know there are a lot of events going on this weekend. There’s an (Amateur Athletic Union) tournament going on this weekend,” Spivey said. “Last year, we had a lot of youth to participate, and some of them may be participating in the tournament, but I’m hoping that we have a lot of support from the residents of Ward Three,” she continued.

Several weeks ago, Dan Roblee, general manager of Clean Harbors and a member of Keep El Dorado Beautiful, told members of KEB that the industry was looking forward to partnering with Spivey and McGhee for cleanup again this year as part of a continuing effort to be a good neighbor in the city’s largest ward.

Spivey said the 2017 event will be coordinated much like the cleanup last year, with a couple of changes added.

More checkpoints will be set up throughout the ward, and street captains will be assigned to each checkpoint.

Spivey said captains will brief volunteers and issue assignments for streets to be cleaned. Supplies will also be provided at the checkpoints.
