Tinker Time planned at museum in Smackover
SMACKOVER — The Arkansas Museum of Natural Resources in Smackover will have a tinker time at 1 p.m. on Saturday and those participating will learn about the “hidden parts of machines, what’s inside a computer, a toy or an old fan,” according to Pam Beasley, museum superintendent.
She said participants will wear safety goggles and use a variety of tools to dissect old appliances, computers and toys to learn how they operate. Participants can explore the different technologies and mechanisms that animate the gadgets that we use every day.
“Once the machines have been deconstructed, the pieces can be used to make jewelry or any work of art that the person can imagine, or put the object back together. The take-apart activity is part of the museum’s Tinkering Studio. In the Tinkering Studio, participants create unique pieces of art, while experimenting with different scientific concepts. Children are free to explore, experiment and construct. Participants also learn how to use common objects in surprising ways, thereby learning a new approach to conserving our natural resources,” Beasley said.
“The take-apart activity reflects the overall theme of the Tinkering Studio, in which participants link science and art through experimentation. For many students, the decorative aspects of the Tinkering projects are as important as are the scientific elements. People will be able to continue this activity at home, when they realize that there are numerous items in their homes that can be used for take-apart activities,” she said.
Participation in this workshop is free. Space is limited so those planning to attend are asked to call (870) 725-2877 to make a reservation.
