MAD’s ticket sales hit over 5,000 in first three days

- By Kaitlyn Rigdon Staff Writer

The Murphy Arts District had “mad” success with their first few days of ticket sales with more than 5,000 tickets sold in the first three days and 485 tickets being sold per hour on Monday.

Tickets became available to purchase for members only on Monday and Tuesday. Ticket sales were opened to the general public on Wednesday, which was in-person only sales through today from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Starting today at 9 a.m., tickets will also be available to the general public online at eldomad. com, by phone at 877-940-3334 and at the box office located at 113 S. Washington St.

The line began as early as 6:15 a.m. Wednesday. Employees of MAD handed out bottles of water and Spudnuts to ticket buyers waiting in line.

Ticket sales were limited to

eight tickets per purchase, per show.

Ticket prices range from $45 to free for the Smokey Robinson concert on Oct. 1.

The first day wasn’t without minor complications. A computer glitch on Monday deleted ZZ Top from the lineup, and ticket-buyers were unable to click on that tab. The problem started at 9 a.m. and was fixed by 10:30 a.m. During that time, MAD took ticket sales over the phone.

“The morning had some hiccups with the technology gods, but we got through them,” Dan Smith, vice president and general manager of MAD said. “We are very thankful for the patience of our membership who were very understanding of mixed messages that came out of our networks.”

MAD also discussed some issues concerning rules and regulations at the Main Street Board meeting Tuesday.

One topic they are debating is whether or not they will allow people to leave and re-enter the shows – if they leave one show and want to come back later for another one.

The matter is under discussion because of safety and security issues that could arise between the time attendees exit and re-enter a show.

Also, only chairs that are 9 inches tall will be allowed in the amphitheater during shows.

MAD’s grand opening is Sept. 27-Oct. 1, with performances by Train, ZZ Top, Ludacris, Brad Paisley, Smokey Robinson and more.

Construction update

The amount of rain this week has not slowed down construction for the district. Several dominoes within the critical path were completed this week, Smith said.

“The restaurant and kitchen are looking more like that every day and the downstairs concessions areas are almost complete. Milam and Diversified (the construction crew) worked the weekend through the rain and stayed on their timelines,” Smith added.
