JC School District prepare for new year
Lowe: JC Blacktop, sprinkler system ‘at mercy of the weather’
JUNCTION CITY — Junction City School District Superintendent Robby Lowe updated administrators regarding building and maintenance projects at a board meeting Tuesday.
School zone signs should be placed near the crosswalk by the end of the week. Other projects face delays because of inclement weather, he said.
“The gym blacktop is kind of at the mercy of the weather right now. Our sprinkler system on the new football practice field is at the mercy of the weather and mercy of the people doing it having the time to do it,” Lowe said.
Board members approved Tankersley,
Sysco, Robertson Produce and C.U. Chem as vendors for the child nutrition department. Director Donna McLelland will “competitively shop among these vendors” who will provide groceries, produce and cleaning agents for the department.
“Line item products to be purchased from these vendors (are) based on pricing, quality, service and availability,” the board agenda item read.
Teachers and administrators will finish up professional development today and having ACT Aspire testing data on hand helps them “go much deeper” when making plans toward improving test scores, Lowe said.
“We’re getting a lot of good stuff done, identifying some weak areas that need to be improved upon and some strong areas that can be better,” he said. “Teachers are breaking down test items … We did make a little progress from last year to this year.”
During a review of the district’s bills, the superintendent revealed that the district bought a new lawn mower from Twin City Outdoor Equipment that’ll be used only on the athletic fields. An updated LPN salary schedule was also approved.
The board accepted the resignation of school nurse Kaci Burton, who was replaced by Michelle Doolin. Lea Thomasson was hired to as the school nurse RN supervisor and will work on an as needed basis. Special education paraprofessional Ethel Cook’s resignation was also accepted and hired Amanda Miller to replace her.
Pending all background checks, the board hired high school library paraprofessional Jasmine Brown. Paula Robertson was appointed to implement a district-wide surrogate parent program this school year.
District Special Programs Director Rebekah West will retain her current position for the upcoming school year. West will
coordinate high school intervention and district 504, discrimination, equity and dyslexia services. Elementary School Principal Teresa Matochik was appointed as the elementary school early intervention coordinator.
The Junction City School Board’s next meeting is schedule at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 12 in the district’s special programs building.
