Strong splits conference clashes at Hampton

HAMPTON - Derrion Davis had a game-high 28 points, as Strong knocked off Hampton 65-44 in a Class 1A-2A District 16 contest on Thursday night.

In the girls contest, Strong couldn't erase a sizable early deficit, falling to the Lady Bulldogs 53-44.

The win for the Bulldogs (5-4, 1-1) was their first in league play, and they will finish a stretch of three games in four days tonight at Hermitage.

Strong got out of the gates quickly, taking an 18-8 lead after the first period before Hampton cut their lead to 28-21 at intermissi­on.

However, the third quarter proved to be the difference in the game, as Strong outscored Hampton 19-8 in the stanza to take a 47-29 edge before winning by the final margin.

In addition to Davis, Jadarrius Dixon was in double figures with 12 points, as was Desmond Newton, who had 10 points.

Corey Jordan added a 3-pointer in the win for Strong.

Jayln Jones had 17 points to lead Hampton.

Foul trouble along with a poor night at the free-throw line ultimately came back to haunt the Lady Bulldogs (3-2, 1-1), who were just 17-of-37 from the charity stripe.

Dynasty Davis had 17 points and Amaya Smith added 15 points for Strong, who trailed 31-22 at halftime.

Kiki Shelton added seven points for Strong.

Cameron Partain had 19 points to lead Hampton.

In the junior girls game, Strong came away with a 37-5 win.

Holly Baker had 16 points, while Chrishunda Williams added 14 points and Daylan Howard chipped in with seven points.
