Smackover claims district softball title.
JUNCTION CITY - Senior Reagan Richardson homered twice and drove in four runs Saturday as Smackover buried McGehee 11-1 in the championship game of the 8 3A
District Tournament. The Lady Bucks improved to 27-6 on the season and will open play in the regional tournament Thursday at 10 a.m. against Cossatot River in Horatio.
Smackover banged out 13 hits in the game, which ended after five innings via the mercy rule.
“I’m real happy with the way the girls hit the ball,” said Smackover coach Dennis Steele. “We ran the bases well. It was a great win.”
Abby Crawford limited the Lady Owls to just three hits and one unearned run in the fifth. She struck out four and walked one. The Lady Bucks committed just two errors defensively.
Offensively, Smackover opened the game with back-to-back solo home runs by Lydia Pullin and Richardson.
The Lady Bucks came back in the second with Vanessa Lofton hitting a double. After Makayla Burroughs walked, Pullin drove in a run with a double. With two outs, Crawford hit a two-run single.
The lead swelled to 8-0 with two runs in the fourth. Pullin singled before Richardson launched another home run.
The final blows came in the bottom of the fifth. Brooklyn Dees singled and moved to second on Lofton’s sacrifice bunt. After Burroughs walked, Pullin plated Dees with a sacrifice fly.
Richardson followed with a run-scoring single. Richardson stole second and scored when Crawford reached on an error.
“She was really zoned in good,” Steele said of Richardson. “I gotta say something too about Pullin. She was 3-for-3 and Lexie Gilbert was 2-for-3. Overall, we hit the heck out of the ball.”
