Senzel helps Cincinnati knock down Cubs 10-2

-

CHICAGO (AP) — Nick Senzel had three hits, scored four times and cut down a runner at the plate, helping Tanner Roark and the Cincinnati Reds beat the Chicago Cubs 10-2 on Sunday.

Led by Senzel, the top third of Cincinnati's lineup collected seven of the Reds' season-high 17 hits. Joey Votto singled twice in his third consecutive multihit game, and Eugenio Suárez finished with two hits and three RBIs.

The last-place Reds also got five scoreless innings from Roark (4-3) in the rubber game of their weekend set against the NL Central leaders. Cincinnati lost 14 of its previous 19 series against Chicago.

The Cubs were hurt by a shaky performance by José Quintana (4-4), and their decidedly dreary afternoon got even worse when Kris Bryant departed with an injury after colliding with center fielder Jason Heyward in the sixth inning.

With two outs and Senzel on first, Heyward and Bryant converged on Suárez's fly ball toward the gap in right-center. It looked as if Heyward called off Bryant on the play, but they ran into each other and the ball went off Heyward's glove.

Bryant, a natural third baseman who occasionally plays the outfield, stayed down as Senzel scored and Suárez hustled into third. Chicago manager Joe Maddon and a trainer ran out to take a look, and the 2016 NL MVP gingerly walked off the field after a short conversation.

The loss of Bryant for any extended period of time would be a big blow for Chicago, which leads the division by 1 1/2 games over Milwaukee. Bryant is batting .345 (30 for 87) with nine homers and 21 RBIs in May.

Senzel singled and scored in the first and third innings. He was nearly picked off in the third, but second baseman Daniel Descalso dropped a throw during the rundown. The rookie was shaken up when he collided with David Bote as he got into second, but he stayed in and scampered home on Suárez's sacrifice fly.

The Cubs strung together three consecutive singles with two out in the bottom half of the third, but Senzel threw out Anthony Rizzo when he attempted to score from second on Willson Contreras' liner to center.

Contreras and Javier Báez homered for Chicago, and Anthony Rizzo added two hits. But it wasn't nearly enough on a tough day for Quintana, who allowed five earned runs and a career-high 12 hits in 5 1/3 innings.

Backup catcher Victor Caratini worked the ninth for the Cubs and surrendered Curt Casali's first homer of the season, a two-run drive to left.

DODGERS 11, PIRATES 7.

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Justin Turner had five hits after taking a day off, Joc Pederson homered during a six-run sixth inning that featured consecutive bases-loaded plunkings and the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 11-7 Sunday to complete a three-game sweep.

Matt Beaty had four RBIs and Corey Seager drove in two for the Dodgers, who got five innings of three-run ball from Kenta Maeda (6-2) in his return from the injured list. Los Angeles has won nine of 11.

Chris Archer (1-5) lost his fifth straight start. He allowed six walks and six hits over five innings of four-run ball, striking out just three while throwing 105 pitches.

Turner had a perfect day at the plate after taking a rest Saturday night. Manager Dave Roberts wanted to be cautious while Turner dealt with discomfort in his left shin.

Los Angeles broke it open against Montana DuRapau and Dovydas Neverauskas in the sixth. Two batters after Pederson's leadoff homer, Turner singled and went to third on Cody Bellinger's double, then scored on Adam Frazier's error at second base. DuRapau walked Seager, then plunked Kiké Hernandez with a 3-2 pitch to put LA ahead 7-3.

Neverauskas relieved and hit Austin Barnes with a bases-loaded pitch while giving up three more runs.

Barnes was injured running the bases and left the game with left groin soreness.

Bryan Reynolds had a two-run homer for Pittsburgh in the second inning, the rookie's fifth. Colin Moran added three hits.

Los Angeles tallied 12 hits and outscored Pittsburgh 28-11 during the series to improve to 6-0 against the Pirates this season.

NATIONALS 9, MARLINS 6.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Howie Kendrick hit his eighth homer, drove in three runs and finished with three hits as the Washington Nationals beat the Miami Marlins 9-6 on Sunday.

Brian Dozier doubled in two during Washington's four-run rally with two outs in Caleb Smith's third and final inning, his shortest outing of the year.

The Nationals have won the first three games against NL-worst Miami in a four-game series that wraps Monday. They entered on a five-game losing streak.

Erick Fedde ( 1- 0) worked five scoreless innings in his second start in place of injured Anibal Sanchez for his first win since Sept. 11 last year.

Juan Soto drew a key walk during the third-inning rally against Smith (3-2). Soto added a sacrifice fly off reliever WeiYin Chen during a fourrun sixth that followed a 24-minute rain delay, and extended his hitting streak to 10 games with an eighth-inning single.

Kendrick hit a solo homer in the second to open the scoring.

It was still a 1-0 game when Soto fought back from an 0-2 hole against Smith to load the bases with a walk. Kendrick followed with a two-run single, and Dozier's double off the out-of-town scoreboard knocked in two more.

The rally came after Fedde escaped a bases-jam unscathed in the top half, striking out Walker on a 2-2 curveball.

Fedde also encountered some trouble in the fifth, walking Harold Ramirez with his 82nd pitch to put runners on first and second. After a mound conference, Brian Anderson flied out to end the inning.

Michael A. Taylor had an RBI double in the sixth and Anthony Rendon added a two-run triple. Soto's sacrifice fly made it 9-0.

ROYALS 8, YANKEES 7, 10 innings.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Royals have been waiting to catch a few breaks. They got one Sunday.

Whit Merrifield got a fortunate hop on an RBI single in the 10th inning, and the Kansas City Royals beat the New York Yankees 8-7 despite blowing a six-run lead.

"I was saying better lucky than good," Merrifield said. "It just worked out for us today. The hop went our way."

Merrifield hit a sharp, two-out grounder toward third baseman Gio Urshela with speedster Billy Hamilton at second. The ball skipped over the head of Urshela — considered a strong defender at the hot corner — giving Hamilton time to race home.

"I just pounded it right in the ground. It was a pretty poor swing, but I'll take it," Merrifield said.

Hamilton had walked against Jonathan Holder (3-2) and stolen second to set up the play.

Hunter Dozier and Jorge Soler homered on back to-pitches in the fifth inning and Martin Maldonado and Ryan O'Hearn also went long as Kansas City hit four home runs in a game for the first time this season. All four had multihit games, with Dozier matching a career high with four hits.

New York's Aaron Hicks tied it in the ninth with a two-run single off Ian Kennedy as the Yankees scored three runs, all with two outs, to make it 7-7.

Kevin McCarthy (2-1) threw a scoreless 10th to earn the win.

Kansas City once again hit around Domingo Germán, who leads the majors with nine wins. Germán gave up a careerhigh seven runs on nine hits in five innings.
