Union County libraries’ summer reading program going strong
The Union County Public Library System’s summer reading program is going strong, bringing fun events on a variety of topics to children and teenagers in Union County as part of the nationwide Collaborative Summer Library Program.
The Collaborative Summer Library Program (CSLP) is a national initiative, bringing states across the country together to provide highquality summer reading materials for children, teenagers and young adults at the lowest cost possible.
The program began in Minnesota in 1987. By 1994, studies from the National Center for Educational Statistics found that 95 percent of libraries had adopted it themselves.
Throughout Union County, libraries are participating.
Children in Strong made patriotic decorations and crowns recently as part of the program.
In Smackover, children put puzzles together.
At the Barton Library in El Dorado, the activities have been varied. Children have been treated to a magic show, lessons on healthy eating, learning about space and more.
Last Monday, El Dorado Mayor Veronica SmithCreer visited children at Barton Library to read from “The Dinosaur That Pooped a Planet!”
More activities are planned throughout the summer at the various libraries that are a part of the UCPLS.
Branches of the UCPLS include:
• Barton Library, 200 E. 5th St. in El Dorado
• Harper Memorial Library, 300 N. Myrtle in Junction City
• Huttig Branch Library, 204 Frost St. in Huttig
• Norphlet Public Library, 106 E. Padgett Rd in Norphlet
• Smackover Public Library, 700 N. Broadway in Smackover
• Strong Public Library, 246 W. 2nd St. in Strong
