Annual hazardous household waste collection to begin in June

Clean Harbors will move ahead next month with its free hazardous household waste collection service.

The drive-up service — which provides area residents with a way to safely dispose of hazardous household waste products — is traditionally offered the third Saturday of the month from April until September.

The start of the 2020 cycle was delayed because of the ongoing coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

Christy Gunter — facilities operations supervisor for Clean Harbors, which disposes of hazardous waste materials through incineration — previously explained that the hazardous household waste service was canceled in April and May “to help protect the health and safety of the community and Clean Harbors employees.”

Gunter also said company officials would evaluate the situation in June.

She said the service collection will be held from 8 a.m. until noon June 20 at 309 American Circle, just off American Road.

Items that are accepted include oil and used oil filters, batteries, paints, solvents, rust removers, antifreeze, automotive products, brake fluids, degreasers, carburetor cleaners, dry cleaning fluids, expired overthe-counter medicines,

herbicides, pesticides, pool chemicals, common household cleaners, electronics/ computers, fluorescent bulbs, butane cylinders and propane cylinders.

All hazardous waste materials should be inside a non-returnable container. Pour-off service will not be offered. Residents who use the collection service should also make sure that the waste can be easily removed from their vehicle to avoid accidental spills.

Items that will not be accepted are smoke detectors, firearms, explosives, compressed gasses, radioactive waste, business-generated waste, biomedical waste, tires, appliances, e-waste, trash and household garbage. For more information, call 870-863-7173.
