Fall bulb sale slated for Oct. 17

- By Caitlan Butler Managing Editor

The Union County Master Gardeners’ annual fall bulb sale is scheduled for Saturday, October 17 at the Murphy Arts District (MAD) Farmers Market.

“The proceeds from our bulb sale help fund our Dirt Friends seminar,” Master Gardener Jana Foster said in an email to the News-Times.

Master Gardeners have selected several bulbs that are easy for new gardeners and fun to grow for more seasoned gardeners alike, according to information provided by the organization.

Bulbs that will be available this year include Crocus, nine different types of Narcissus (also known as daffodils or jonquils), two different Hyacinths, Dutch iris, ten different Tulips, Allium Drumsticks, Spanish Bluebells and Anemones.

“Even if you are new to gardening, all of our bulbs are easy to grow. Most of our bulbs are perennial, meaning they will come back next year,” Foster said.

Several of the varieties of tulips that will be sold this year are old favorites of local gardeners, and some are new to the sale. ‘Cretaceous,’ new to the sale, is mostly yellow with touches of scarlet. ‘Tom Pounce’, a favorite of local Master Gardeners, is back again, as is the narcissus ‘Tahiti,’ which sold out last year.

“Tulips, unless they are wild tulips, are considered an annual here, meaning they will only bloom for one year,” Foster said. “We have a variety of bulbs depending on what you are looking for.”

Masks will be required at the bulb sale, as they are at the MAD Farmers Market. Those who attend are also asked to social distance with at least six feet between themselves and others.

Master Gardeners will be on hand at the sale to assist shoppers.

The bulb sale will be held from 8 to 11 a.m. or until bulbs are sold out.
