Election Commission appoints new chairperson

- By Matt Hutcheson Staff Writer

The Union County Election Commission met on Friday, Feb. 26, at the Union County Courthouse.

Republican commissioner Cliff Wright was joined by two newly-appointed commissioners: Democrat Floyd Thomas and Republican Mike Hayes.

The first order of new business was the nomination of a new commission chairperson.

Wright, who has been acting chairman since new members were appointed to the commission, was nominated and unanimously appointed to the position by the other commissioners.

Next, Wright nominated Valerie Mullins as secretary for the commission, and she was also unanimously appointed.

“I want to give a little background on [Mullins.] She actually ran early voting [during the general election]. Part of her duties

as secretary will be dual-function; she and I will head up early voting and she will be here to take care of minutes, to make sure all of our reports are in on time and that nothing falls through the cracks. I think she’ll be a good asset,” Wright said.

Wright provided the commissioners with an information binder concerning the upcoming school board elections and explained parts of it during the meeting.

“We don’t have anything going on until March 2. Monday is the deadline for everyone to have filed for the school board election. So far everyone is running unopposed,” he said.

Commissioners also planned to draw for ballot positions on March 8 if necessary.

Early voting for the school board election will begin on May 11, with times from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Early voting ends on May 17 and the election will be held on May 18, with polls open from 7:30 a.m. until 7:30 p.m.
