Parkers Chapel wins seventh straight
PARKERS CHAPEL - Parkers Chapel's pitching staff has had a tremendous week to date.
After Trace Shoup threw a no-hitter on Monday against Junction City, Reid Cates and Mason Dougan combined on an abbreviated shutout at Spring Hill on Tuesday.
On Wednesday, it was Caleb Barnes' turn, as the junior carried a shutout into the sixth to lift the Trojans to a 6-3 win over Claiborne Academy (La.) at Robert McKinnon Park.
Barnes fell one out short of a complete game, allowing four hits and three runs with only one being earned over 6 2/3 innings. He walked one and struck out nine.
The win is the seventh straight for the Trojans (17-5), who have allowed just 12 runs total during their winning streak, which includes three shutouts.
Cates, who was the winning pitcher against Spring Hill, needed just two pitches to record the final out of the game.
Barnes pounded the strike zone, throwing 65 of his 90 pitches for strikes.
Parkers Chapel pulled away methodically, scoring single runs in the first and third innings before scoring three runs in the fifth to take a 5-0 lead.
The visitors scored three runs in the sixth to cut the lead to 5-3, but the Trojans answered with a run in the bottom half of the inning to make the final margin.
Austin Looney, one of four Trojans with two hits in the win, opened the scoring with an RBI triple in the first.
Looney, who had six RBIs at Spring Hill on Tuesday, went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a walk in Wednesday's win.
Cates went 2-for-4 while scoring a run, and Shoup scored three runs while going 2-for-4 with an RBI.
Barnes helped himself going 2-for-3 for the Trojans, who had 10 hits in the contest.
Blake Caldwell and Spencer Frisby each had a single to round out the Trojans' attack.
Parkers Chapel jumps back into 8-2A play on Friday when they host Gurdon.
