Rester ready to roll at quarterback

Finally, Sharmon Rester was given the keys to the car. And, what a shiny, fast car El Dorado's offense could be.

The senior quarterback played as a backup as a sophomore. Last season, he was a running back-receiver-quarterback combination before taking more of a QB role late in the year.

This season, the job will be Rester's. It has been since the spring and all through summer camps and 7-on-7 tournaments.

El Dorado quarterbacks' coach Dawson Moser said Rester put in the work during the off-season and should be prepared for his best season, yet.

“Rester's primary focus during the off-season was being able to put a little touch on the football,” said Moser. “We all know that he can throw the long ball, but we just had to work on controlling ball speed on the shorter routes. He is much more confident in his abilities and in his progressions.

“And, any time we can throw a hitch, we have a chance to score with every guy that we have outside as a receiver.”

As solid as Rester sits in the role of starting QB, sophomore Jamison Dumas appears to be just as entrenched in the backup position. He saw plenty of action in the spring and all through the summer.

“This summer we had the opportunity to take two separate teams to 7-on-7s and team camps, so every person on the team got reps,” said Moser. “This was huge in the development process for not only quarterbacks, but for everyone at every position.”

If Dumas steps into the game, Moser said the offense won't change.

“We are running the same offense with both guys. Jamison is a young guy with a lot of upside,” said Moser. “As a sophomore and only having the spring and summer under his belt, his understanding of the offense and his decision-making process have made tremendous strides this off-season. He may not be as explosive as Rester with his legs, but Dumas did have a 60-yard touchdown run in practice against our twos.”

The Wildcats' offense could be super fast this season. The quarterbacks' job will be to see how fast the car can go while keeping it on the road.

“Rester and Dumas are both hard workers. Whether it comes to film study or practice, both guys bring it and are pushing each other to get better,” Moser said. “Whether it be the ones up or the twos up, the other guy is standing behind the offense getting mental reps. This just shows how these guys operate, and how bad they want to succeed.”
