Speed holds key for Bulldogs in first season of eight-man football

As Strong gets ready for its first season of eight-man football, it does so with some key personnel returning from last year.

LaQuincy Shelton played at running back a year ago, but the junior will be transitioning to play at quarterback with the graduation of Emauri Newton.

“He increased at least 30 pounds in all core lights in the offseason,” Strong coach Sirl Wright said of Shelton.

Wright added that senior Byron Maze will share some snaps at quarterback.

In the backfield, Strong has a seasoned veteran back in senior Treveon Daniels.

“He is a returning senior with experience and grit,” Wright said. “He increased at least 30 pounds in all core lights in the offseason. His biggest jump was the back squat by 70 pounds.”

If there is one thing the Bulldogs have at the skill position spots, it’s speed and experience.

Strong has a pair of seniors in Caneilus Betters and Jeremy Jackson at wide receiver.

“He has shifty speed, and he had the fastest three-cone drill times,” Wright said of Betters.

Jackson showcased his speed back in the spring by setting the 1A record in the 200-meter dash.

When he isn’t playing at quarterback, Maze will line up at tight end.

“A returning senior with great size (6’5”) and speed,” Wright said. “He has a high football IQ.”

The three-man line consists of two seniors and a junior.

“The offensive line is seasoned and poised for a great year,” Wright said of the unit.

Greg Aubrey, a senior, is at left guard. “A returning senior with great speed and agility for a lineman,” Wright said of Aubrey.

Jayme Correa, also a senior, is the center. Like Jackson, he also shined on the track team by earning All-State honors.

“A returning senior who is a great leader and line signal-caller,” Wright said. “The strongest bulldog with heart.”

At right guard, junior Devin Osgood is slated to get the starting nod.

“A new junior transfer with size and wit,” Wright said.

For the Bulldogs’ offense to have success, Wright said there were three things his team must do.

“Blocking, securing the ball and executing at a fast pace,” Wright said.
