As the Summer draws to a close, School is going to start. A new beginning, whole new ball game, new teachers, new friends and old friends. I won’t forget my Sophomore year, at El Dorado High School. I just left Barton Junior High, the previous year and started my first year at E.H.S. I was getting ready, for the first day of school. My Mother’s sister and my Aunt Perry Murphy was at our house. She told me “Today is Howdy day.” I arrived at the school. My homeroom was the Little Theater. Mr. Morris Graham, was my homeroom teacher. We stayed in homeroom all day and didn’t change classes until the next day. The first day back then was only a half day session. I got to know m teachers. First Period was Choral music. Mr. James O. Foxx, was the teacher. He told the class that I was a natural Bass. We had a lot of fun that year. In my Junior year, it was more the same, just different classes and different subjects. Now my Senior Year, was the highlight of all years. I was in Senior Follies and did my rendition of “The Devil Went Down To Georgia.” At everyone of my School reunions, I had to do it, because they loved it and it brought back memories. I want to wish all of our school kids a very happy prosperous school year. Donald Putman

To the Editor:

I wonder how many people watched Jeopardy on July 27th. 2022?

I am a long Jeopardy fan and watch it every day that I am at home.

On the 27th. Ken Jennings was the host, and our little city of El Dorado was a Jeopardy question!

I could not believe my ears when Ken asked, “If you were in El Dorado looking for Hope what state would you be in?”

Of course I immediately knew the answer, and also did the lady who answered the question with “Arkansas.”

I wanted those who missed Jeopardy that day to know that El Dorado was worthy of being a Jeopardy question, and answered correctly.

A “Big Shout Out” to Cecil Polk, my representative for my District 6 on the Union County Quorum Court for his help on getting the road repaired on Grad Bell and Nick Springs Road.

I appreciated his promptness in getting this done and for all of the other residents. Jud Albritton El Dorado

To the Editor:

Kudos to Preisdent Biden for getting his anti inflation legislation passed in Congress. Also praise to Biden for his work in gun control legislation. I hope Biden will consider Elizabeth Warren for a cabinet post, should one come up, or a federal judgeship, especially a Supreme Court appointment. Warren is a real jewel in the party and is definitly presidential material . I am rereading her auto boigrpahy Persist . President Biden is doing an excellent job governing, and desreves the credit. I believe he will relected in 2024.

Trump needs to be indicted and sent to a federal prison for his crimes. People are so stupid to think he “hangs the moon”. Maybe the GOP will realize this , when Trump is indicted and sent”up the river”.

Dear Editor,

Barton Public Library’s 2022 Summer Reading Program was a huge success. This year we had 300 children, teens, and adults to register for the program. The total number of attendance for the presentations were over 2,300. The number of books read during the 7-week period, were over 5,300. The children were required to read a certain number of books for their age division. In each division, the books were recorded on a reading log, and prizes were awarded for every 10 books. At the end of the program, gift cards were awarded to a first, second and third place winners in each of the four divisions. The four different groups were: Infants-preschool, children, teens and adults.

A special thanks to the following local organizations, businesses, and individuals in our community for their donations or presentations to our summer reading program. Without their contributions and generosity in promoting literacy, this program would not have been a huge success. The sponsors included: Sonic, Union County Historical Society, Chicken Express, McDonald’s, Arkansas Museum of Natural Resources, Union County Extension Office, Logoly State Park, Dave’s Cave, Block R Feed and Seed, Salvation Army, One Heart Dojo, Dr. Carty, Director of Technology at Southark Community College, South Arkansas C.P.A., El Dorado Service League, Delek U. S. A., Delek Logistics, Kiwanis, United Way, L. Morgan, Karen O’Connell, Stephen & Sharilyn Terry, and Maureen DeBruin.

The children and I are grateful for the coverage from El Dorado NewsTimes of our summer reading events. We appreciate all of the hard work and contributions from everyone who helped make this summer program a wonderful success. The children enjoyed the refreshments, which included hot dogs, chips, drinks, snow cones and watermelon slices served at the summer blowout. Sincerely,

Karla Nelson
