SAAC: 2 projects are scheduled for Corks and Canvas

There’s still time to sign up before Thursday’s class

The South Arkansas Arts Center still has some spots available in its upcoming Corks and Canvas class scheduled for tomorrow, Feb. 16.

This month’s class will be led by artist Jessica Kearns, a new SAAC instructor and longtime art educator.

Kearns will teach two projects in this class. The first, “Lighting Up My Future,” involves making a painted water bottle lantern.

“This recycled bottle is painted with bright paint personally selected to represent my mood, dreams for the future and excitement to light up my future aspirations,” she said. “The solar light signifies my beacon of hope and when lit at night it illuminates my way even when I dream. Creating this piece called, ‘Lighting Up My Future’ gives me hope that positive change will come and, in turn, will enlighten others how some in this world don’t have access to safe lighting. One light on will inspire others to light theirs!”

The second class involves painting a wine glass; it’s called “Bee Warm in the Sun.”

“’Bee Warm in the Sun’ was inspired by my favorite flower - the sunflower! Sunflowers always made me feel happy and warm. I love how this flower species will follow the sun’s movements during the day. When I think of sipping my favorite drink in the sun, I feel inspired to create art and I am happy. This wine glass was created with glass enamel paint. Come and paint your flower inspired wine glass with a bee or lady bug!”

By day, Kearns works in asset development at Murphy USA. She previously taught K-6th grade art for 21 years in New York. Kearns also is a small business owner of Chong Watermark, which creates personalized paintings and mixed media works for customers in the local community.

The cost of this month’s class is $40, and proceeds will be donated to providing elec

tricity in Kenya. The country is close to Kearns’ heart; she currently teaches SAAC’s new “Art of Kenya” class.

Supplies and snacks are included in the cost of the class, but participants are urged to bring their own beverage of choice.

Colleen Means, marketing director for SAAC, said on Tuesday spots were still available for the class, which will be held from 6-9 p.m. tomorrow. For more information, or to register for this month’s Corks and Canvas class, visit saac-arts.org or call 870-862-5474.
