SouthArk basketball teams fall in tourneys

South Arkansas Community College’s basketball teams saw their seasons come to an end on Wednesday in the opening round of the NJCAA Region 2 Basketball Tournament.

In the men’s game, SAU Tech outlasted SouthArk 68-64.

The Stars (12-13), who were the No. 5 seed, had three players in double figures with Braedon Edison and Tim Johnson scoring 15 points apiece, while former Junction City standout Jerrodney Tubbs chipped in with 13 points.

Allen Taylor had a game-high 28 points for SAU Tech, the No. 4 seed who hits the road to take on No. 1 seed ASU Mid-South on Saturday.

Wednesday’s game was the third between the schools.

SouthArk picked up its biggest win in the history of program in the first meeting by topping the Rockets 72-64 in El Dorado.

SAU Tech won the rematch in Camden 66-55 last Saturday in the Region 2 finale for both teams.

In the women’s game, the Stars fell to

Arkansas Mid-South 73-43.

The Stars, who were the No. 6 seed, fell behind 20-8 at the end of the first quarter and couldn’t overcome the early deficit.

Kylee Portilloz and Kassidy McJunkins each had double-doubles for the Stars.

Portilloz had 19 points and 10 rebounds, while McJunkins chipped in with 15 points and 10 rebounds.

The Stars (2-18) had a tough night offensivel­y, connecting on just 28.6% of their shots from the floor.

Kya Washington led three players in double figures with 19 points, as the Lady Greyhounds shot just 31.8% from the floor.

Jazzmen Robinson had a double-double in the win, finishing with 10 points and 13 rebounds.

Arkansas Mid-South, the No. 3 seed, hits the road to face No. 2 seed North Arkansas on Saturday.
