Lady Wildcats blitz Nashville to stay perfect in soccer

- News-Times Staff

NASHVILLE - It took El Dorado 26 minutes to get on the scoreboard Monday at Nashville. The Lady Wildcats would then score nine goals in 14 minutes and erupt to a 14-0 road non-conference win.

El Dorado improved to 4-0 with four shutouts.

“We started off sluggish. The first 26 minutes of the game, we didn’t score a goal,” said El Dorado coach Neville Matthews. “We hit everything but the back of the net - crossbar, side bar - I don’t know if the bus ride had something to do with it. It’s not like they weren’t playing well. The ball just wasn’t going into the net.”

The Lady Wildcats led 9-0 at the intermission.

Marleigh Bonsall scored four goals to lead the charge. London Ingram and Caroline Meadows also recorded hat tricks while Millee Mobley scored twice. Delia Gonzalez and Julia Jackson added a goal apiece.

Despite the early struggle to find the net, Matthews stressed his team wasn’t playing poorly.

“We weren’t scoring but we weren’t playing bad, if that makes any sense. The ball just wasn’t going into the back of the net,” he said.

“They would build up. The movement was fine. They just couldn’t score a goal. I thought the goals were smaller for a minute. After we got the first one, they started to rain after that. I guess their confidence was up. They started to fall after that.”

Nashville wasn’t credited with a single shot on goal.

“I got all of my players in to play. Some of the young kids got some playing time,” said Matthews. “Overall, I thought after that first 26 minutes, they played well.”
