EHS set to defend titles at conference meet

- By Tony Burns

The 5A South Track & Field Championships will be held Tuesday at Hot Springs Lakeside. El Dorado is the reigning champion in both boys and girls.

Both divisions this year could come down to El Dorado and Lake Hamilton.

“Right now, if you judge by what everybody has done thus far, it is El Dorado and Lake Hamilton, if everybody does what they're capable of,” said El Dorado girls' coach John Koonce. “Now, you never know what's going to happen. You don't know if other schools have been keeping kids in reserves, kind of holding them as a secret weapon. And you never know if the kids are going to have a good day or a bad day.

“But judging from what has happened this year, it is El Dorado and Lake Hamilton for both conference and state. Sheridan will be a factor.”

The Lady Wildcats have been dominant this season, led by sophomore Zyron Brock, who will join unbeaten senior Davin James in the high jump and will lead a cadre in the long jump and sprints.

DeAndra Burns Jr. will compete in the boys' 100, 200, 400 and long jump along with the 4x200.

“The goal is to win it, try to bring back backto-back conference champs and do something that's never been done here before,” said El Dorado boys' coach DeAnthony Curtis.

The Wildcats will lean on Takoi Stewart in the throwing events.

El Dorado has struggled in the 4x100 this season while the 4x200 has been dominant.

“Hopefully we can get the stick around with the 4x100,” said Curtis. “The 4x200, we have to get the stick around there because there's no automatic qualifying for that. We haven't qualified so we need to be in the top four.”
