- News-Times Staff

HOT SPRINGS - Zero deductions in a one performance takes it all scenario equaled championship for Smackover on Friday. The Lady Bucks scored 80.3 to win the 3A State Cheerleading Championship in the senior high performance division at Bank of the Ozark Arena.

Gosnell scored 70.8 to finish as a distant runner-up followed by Booneville (65.7), Glen Rose (65.1), Elkins (64.2), Lamar (64.0) and Atkins (56.8).

“I knew pretty early this team had the talent to go all the way,” said Coach Jennifer Reed. “We gained some talented sophomores. Some girls returned after taking a year off from cheer and the rest of the team is no strangers to winning. They were part of the 2021 state championship team so they know what it takes to win.

“But I think what set us apart this year was that they formed a bond half way through the comp season and everything started clicking. They were confident and trusted their teammates. I think that bond was evident on stage and was just really fun to watch.”

Smackover won in the categories of best crowd leading, best building, best jumps and tumbling.

Reed pointed out there are no preliminary rounds in the competition. The squad had one opportunity and took advantage of it.

“We don't have a finals since we are compete performance. It's a one-time, win or lose situation for us,” noted Reed, who said her squad was helped by support from the community.

“The Smackover crowd showed up and was phenomenal at getting the team ready to take the stage. We are so proud of all of these athletes.”
